Lili Taylor playing Lori Welhner-was this supposed to be a Scottish accent??? Sounded like a poor Irish accent at best. Movie was good apart from her ridiculous voice- didn't know whether to laugh at it or cringe. Ended up cringing....ALOT.

Uhm... I think that was meant to be a rather obvious joke. I have no idea what it's called in Canada, I wasn't even aware of the American expression "cutting the cheeze" until I looked it up, but I think that's way beside the point.
Welhner obviously hasn't noticed the poster before, and when confronted with it he tries to worm his way out of it by making up the thing about "cracking/cutting". Come on, you can see the cogwheels grinding in his brain before he comes up with it.
I remember people saying 'squeeze the cheese' in High School ... in Australia. I'm guessing the important part is really that cheese smells? No matter what you do to it...

Only reason I can think of is the similarity between Scotland and Canada, both countries regarded as the "reject" of the more widely known country, in this case being England and America respectively.
She's a big actress for such a small and annoying role, the accent ruined her character, why cast her for such a role?
It is by far the worst, and most unnecessary use of an accent in a movie in a long time.

It should be noted that the Scots and Canadians have a long history together. Not least the fact that in the 1600's Nova Scotia was formed during the reign of King James I of Great Britain (who was Scottish). Another possible reason could be because so many Scots immigrated to Canada from the 19th century onwards (My own great grandfather traveled there as a young gentleman).
I'm sure people more educated in this field could blabber on here for much longer than me but I want to make one thing clear. Scotland is not a reject of England. We are the only area in the UK that house prices are not falling. English banks are closing, Royal Bank of Scotland is posting record profits.

Agreed. Her attempt at a scots accent was perhaps the most abismal of movie history to date. Understandable if she has never heard a real scots accent but inexcusable from the point of view of character authenticity. And shoddy. I had the impression that psuedo-Irish was considered 'near enough'. Taking the kids to see Grandma in Glasgow? With an accent like that Grandma would likely send them back stamped 'Not Known At This Address".

I agree that her accent was bad. What's worse is that no-one in the whole team of thousands that it took to make the film noticed or said anything.
The accent she spouted had all the hallmarks of the stage Oirish accent, but even on that front it fails.
Question arises: Why was she not Canadian or American? Just so she could leave his life completely?
she didnt sound scottish, irish or even british in general... I watched the movie in two halves as I fell asleep half way. and when i got around to the second half a few days later i had forgotten what nationality she was meant to be and me an my girlfriend tried to figure it out (i am english and she is welsh) and my bedst guess was that she was dutch, and my girlfriends best guess was that she was english brought in india or something odd like that. only when she mentioned going to glasgow did we remember she was meant to be scottish. I mean, as if that was even a close resemblence of a scottish accent!
pathetic and as far as the story goes, totally pointless.

If you listen to the Director's Commentary, you will hear Conrad explain that he had her do a Scottish accent exactly because it made no sense for her to have a Scottish accent. He also made up the Monster Face doctor language bit (which he later cut). Apparantly, he likes to put absurd things in his movies, which hit or miss (e.g. tap dancing shoes to work. "Richard Wehlner" edited into a motivational speaking tape by a motivational speaker who lets you know that he doesn't pay for the licensing of music). This movie had classic comedy moments, but if you are trying to look for the realism in everything, you are going to miss the comedy.
Canada a reject of the U.S.? What a weird view of the world you have. Amusing.
