Found this at the local library and the title made me pick it up. WOW!!!!! This will stay with me for a long time!!! Just amazing!!! Very grim, but it really blew me away- you have to see it to believe it. Set it to english, and get rid of the sub-titles for the best watching. I really can't believe my library had it!!

In the english dubbed version i have seen, it's Ulrich Thomsen own voice they use. He is one of our (Danish) best actors, if not the best. He starred in "Festen" Or what you all call it?. It is a great movie to start with if you want to see some Danish Dogme films from the period. Or just want to see a good film that goes to the bone.
This one, "Opium" is not a masterpiece, but it is not bad either. Much better than most of what comes out of the U.S. if you like movies that allows art and not just effects. Ulrich Thomsen acting are the strongest part of the movie. But seeing what psychiatric treatment was at the turn of last century, and how the doctors just took it for granted, gives food for thought, and gives the whole film a macabre mood.
I think the title "Opium" is a bit stretched. If they wanted sell it on the drug theme, they probably should have called it "Morphine", "Knock Knock" would have been my choice ;-) Ok, not.
And I hope there is not someone who stupid enough to try making the number whit the poppy juice. You could get everything from abscess to water in the lungs from taking codeine iv. So don't try that at home kids!

Why would watching this dubbed in English be better than hearing the original language? That makes no sense.

Well, I thought it was remarkable, but then again, I have a thing for Asylum films, as my parents got engaged in one (lol: both were working there) and I've worked as a therapist in residential treatment. Am starting up a few threads on this film as I feel it deserves more discussion.
