Rant on the battle system

I don't think this Battle system is the end-all amazing experience everyone else seems to...

1) Why can't I just switch to control another character in a fight?

2) I think Paradigms are a good idea - but can you let us change one person's class during a battle also?

3) If your main character dies - Game Over. I know that one is pounded into the dirt - but it's ridiculous.

4) The enemy/boss likes to do cleaves and AOE attacks - why does my party feel the need to stand so close to each other? Can the caster please back up - can the melee stand behind the guy? No? Okay...

5) I hate that I can only summon the lead characters Eidolon. I've seen Odin's summon 100 times, yet the others maybe twice.

6) Are the computer-controlled Saboteurs mentally handicapped? Please don't cast Fog five times in a row...then when the enemy gets Fogged, cast it six more times in a row...You can deprotect/deshell/poison anything - but unless I control them - they suck.

7) Why won't the other commandos attack the same target my commando is attacking? Basic battle strategy is kill one enemy at a time - but they other guy just runs off and attacks someone else - splitting my damage. I go and attack the target they're on - what do they do? They stop attacking them and run off to another character.

...This battle system isn't all it's cracked up to be. It's pretty broken to me. I prefer classic turn-based battles, but at least with XII I could tell the other characters exactly what to do - or switch to them if I want them to do something else. In this one you assign them to a class and let them screw up half the time.

Am I the only one that thinks this stuff?

1) I think its because the idea is they want a more fast paced system in the similar vein of Advent Children. Using all the characters slows that whole process down. Now we just have the illusion of control with paradigms.

2) Technically you can, if you set the paradigms beforehand with the one character change in mind.

3) It makes sense as far as since you're only using one character per battle, if that one dies it's over. But I agree, who the hell came up with that idea. (Although, I like their cheesy little death lines: I can't stop now!/No.......)

4) I think the game has its own intuitive element about where to place the characters. In the past we were allowed to set the foreground/background status. This doesn't bother me that much, it makes the game more challenging, and honestly it needs to be more challenging. Half the game, they're babying you throughout.

5) Keep playing for this one. (And wtf, why the hell are Eidolons transformers now?)

6) LOL

7) yeah, this is a great point. is there a way to change that?? someone help. It totally ruins my paradigm shifting.

but, yeah I agree with you on most of this stuff.

I agree with you about the AI, though it's not just the Saboteurs that act like dimwits. Sometimes I wonder if my Medics are blind as they use 1 cure on a character that needed 2/3 spells instead.

I also agree with the OP, the AI it's such a dumbass both as saboteur and as a healer (one character has 200 HP the other 1000 HP, yet it first cures the one with 1000 HP?)

LOL about the 6) point.

I don't like the battle system either. All you have to do to win is constantly mash "auto-battle". The only time you're required to do otherwise is when you need to cure your party members or during the odd boss fight you'd like Haste to help you along.

As for #5, the eidolons aren't that great anyway. They're weak and I've never needed them to heal or revive my party.

1) I agree with you there, that would have been nice.

2) Just set them before battles so only one character changes. You have 7 spaces for paradigms, use them.

3) That is stupid, especially when the other characters are medics.

4) One of the best RPGs is Chrono Trigger, it used a similar battle system. Enemies and Characters moved around and ran into and out of AOE and cleave attacks freely. Why is this game seen as bad because of it?

5) Eidolons weren't too useful anyway.

6) They queue up skills based on the second when they appear, often the skills do no apply to when they cast them. They cast multiple debuffs to make sure it takes effect. They cure the one who needs it more, with priority to the lead character.

7) This is the way they designed it, it spreads out damage and is meant to take out multiple enemies at once. It doesn't work well though. Just don't use it unless there is only one enemy. Its great for boss battles.

I like your logic. "How can something be bad if it's in a great game like CT?" mixed with a little "It's been done before, why are you complaining?"

I've been hit in the nuts before, too. I complained then, and if it happened to me again today, I'd complain again. And if it was the hottest girl to have ever lived who did it to me, guess what, I'd STILL complain. Things that suck don't suck any less because they're sometimes tied to things that are awesome.

You're not alone. It's awful!
