first impression (don't blind buy it!)

I was a huge fan of FFVII thru FFX, as well as some of the earlier games.

I'm uninspired so far. The characters bore and annoy me, and they seem like remixed versions of previous FF heroes. The voice acting is getting on my nerves. Some dialogue is just plain awful.

I obviously need to play through the game quite a bit more, but just a heads up to people: don't buy it automatically expecting the same enjoyment from the previous games. Do your research first and/or rent or borrow it.

The creators have said that they have made the game alot more linear in order to tell a more compelling, meaningful story.I think its a little arrogant on their part to assume the story is good enough to make up for the lack of gameplay. The story isnt, In my opinion, nearly strong enough.Im just starting chapter 5 and im enjoying it but not in the same way i have enjoyed the previous FF games. There are alot of cool little touches like crystarium and the paradigm system. The whole battle system is exceptionally well done but that in itself is not enough to carry the game alone.I have no feeling for the characters and do not particularly care about their journey.I have heard it opens up a bit further in but so far its lacking everything that makes a FF game. I'm about an hour into the game and I'm bored already! I thought I bought a game and not a movie! Its cut scene after cut scene and very little interaction so far. The fighting is repetitive and boring! As I'm typing this I'm into another cut scene.

Should I stick at it and be patient? Does it get any better than this? Or if I don't like it at this stage am I ever going to like it?

This post isn't intending to offend the die hard fans and I'm not trolling the post, I just can't seem to get into it. My first impressions are that this game is over rated and over hyped. I wonder what the trade in value is.

If thats the case then I am disappointed. One the elements I liked about the past Final Fantasy games, is the fact that you can progress the story at your own pace, as the games give you ample opportunity to explore and level up. I have to say, the start of this game was disappointing and surprisingly dull. However, it does get better once your characters' paths merge.

At chapter 11 out of 14, while I wish it hadn't taken so long for the game to open up into larger areas and sidequests, very linear story progress has always been part of the nature of Final Fantasy games going all the way back to FFI; this is nothing new. It's just a bit more noticeable in FFXIII because of the narrow areas, which if I had to guess were probably designed in reaction to similar complaints about the vast open spaces in FFXII. I liked the big open spaces myself, but FFXIII's story isn't any more linear than that of most other FF games.

I do think that the supporting cast is pretty weak so far, but all of the six party characters are very well-developed. No, they're not all very likeable at the beginning, but that's the point - they all receive a lot of development as the story goes along. That seems to be the main focus of the game's story, in fact, considering it takes up by far the most screen time to the exclusion of development for the villains and secondary characters.

Great point. If you want to talk about linear, look at FFX. You couldnt do any really free roaming until you got the airship at the very end! Thats not to say that I disliked it. The thing I've learned about Final Fantasy over the years. If you love one you might not like the next one at all. I thought 1 was great. 2 annoyed the piss out of me. 7 was outstanding and 8 just felt tedious to me. Every one has a new system that you'll either like or dislike. Me? I like 13's design. People make fun of the autobattle system and say its repetitive but its only that way if you make it that way

Hey Digimortal2076,
I was just wondering - did you ever get into it in the end?

Personally I really enjoyed FF13 and didn't mind it's linearity (which completely opened up after a while btw).

So, after quite a while on - what are your final impressions of the game?

I feel the same way. I am forcing myself to continue playing even though I'm bored out of my mind. Not to mention the fact that they made the print so hard to read, it drives me crazy. I'm actually more impressed with FFXII's gameplay. :)

I'm about 8.5 hours in, at Chapter 5 and personally I'm enjoying it immensely. I'm enjoying the story thus far, the characters on the whole are easy to engage with, the battle system is great fun and the upgrading/dismantling of objects and components looks like it could get pretty comprehensive.

Personal favourite is the Paradigm system.

Sure the game is very linear - travel down a path, with a few branches off it for treasure chests, to get to your objective. I completely understand why this will rub people up the wrong way.

My first impressions in relation to previous installments was that it reminded me very much of FFX - which to a degree was also pretty linear.

So again - my personal opinion of the game is high, so far so good. But like most games out there it's splitting opinion which is completely understandable. Some will like it, others will hate it - and everyone's entitled to that choice.

Cheers.

XII may very well be my favorite, or at least one of them. Excluding Vaan and Penelo.

I like XIII so far, more than I thought would after all I had heard. However, I'm in Chapter 5 and my desire to strangle Hope continually grows and makes playing segments with him a bit of a chore because there's always a chance he's going to open his mouth again.

im tolerating Vanille so far...Hope not so much, reminds me of a younger more annoying vaan.

I'm actually starting to like the game a bit more now. I think you just need to give it a bit of time and wait until the story starts to unfold. I'm liking the cutscenes which makes the characters a lot better, and i like the interaction between certain characters such as Sash and Vanille. Also, the introduction of small things like upgrading weapons and accessories adds some much needed variety.

The story is getting better as it moves along and now I want to see what happens next.

However, I know this has been said to death, but I really miss the explorational style from past Final Fantasy games. I really liked the system they used in Final Fantasy XII which still allowed you to explore various areas and progress the main plot when you see fit.

then you have no taste.

i was a huge fan of VII and X and VI too, i LOVE them to death.

but FFXIII is easily amongst my favorites now.

its so good, only the first few hours are boring and easy : )

I'm up to Chapter 9 (start of it) so far. The storyline has been inconsistent in quality, imo. Some of the character subplots interest me, and others don't... and then some of the characters get on my nerves while others I'm finding I like. The story concept of the fal'Cie and l'Cie is great, but the execution of the story itself is feeling a bit lacking at times.

Spoilerish
Still wish Hope would had embedded that knife into the back of Snow's neck though during the piggy-back scene...

I think the problem I have it that there wasn't much progress with the main storyline's plot. It was just following the characters running and dealing with there own subplots. It didn't feel to me that the game was really progressing anywhere for a while. It has started to move again, but it is not as engaging to me as past games. I don't hate it. I still like the game. But I don't love it. I hope this changes, which I know it can... as originally I got bored of FFX before giving it a second shot and finding the second half much much better than the first.

I do miss the open world, and I wish I had better control over who I could use in my party. The corridor layout makes options for when I want to level grind up much more repetitive than in other games. I don't think I'm a fan of the weapon/accessory upgrading system though. *shrug* But I can work with it.

On the pro-side, I like the game mechanics of primarily switching your parties classes out and around moment by moment in a battle (and the stagger system). It's a neat variation. The crystarium board is highly reminiscent of FFX's sphere grid, which is cool to see again. The graphics are looking better with every game (although I think FFVII:ACC spoiled me in some regards ).

As far as video games go, "SO FAR" I'm giving the game a solid B. As far as Final Fantasy games go, this unfortunately scales to a C-.

But as I said before, I've seen FF games turn around in the second half before, and I'm hoping for the same.

*crossing fingers*

Update: I'm now in the middle of Chapter Ten... there is hope. I'm getting more interested.

Just bought it last night. I hated the beginning and thought I'd wasted my money. The first two hours were so BORING, spamming auto battle until everything was dead. I got to the part of the game with the paradigm shifts and crystal progression, and I love it now. I had a hard time putting it down and going to bed. The dialogue couldn't be much more Japanacorny though.

Back off man. I'm a scientist.

I've finished the game now with the exception of half of the sidequests. Hope and Vanille grew on me a lot (later in the game) and became very useful in battle teams.

I loved it although to me it felt less traditionally Final Fantasy. It seems like something separate to the franchise somehow. I guess it has probably been harder to make more adult Final Fantasy games in the same vein as previous games on a next gen console. It's almost like every time there is a new platform they have to adapt to that medium and things have to change. For example I could never see Final Fantasy VI as it is working as a PS3 game! It fits the 16 bit medium wonderfully but a direct translation of the story into high def would come out completely laughable even (or especially?)to diehard fans of the game.

From what I have seen I don't expect Final Fantasy Versus XIII will feel that traditionally Final Fantasy either, but perhaps more so since I heard they have "gotten airships working over the world map", (perhaps suggesting they couldn't work this out for XIII?) which sounds a bit more FF. XIII was originally going to be a PS2 game, and given that this was the first game for the 7th generation consoles. They had to get used to developing for the new console and may have changed some gameplay and story elements because of what they were able to do technically speaking.

I'd actually like to see a Final Fantasy IX type game on a next gen console. I think that sort of style and feel could actually work well.

Anyway, after going off on a tangent... I loved and recommend this game, but only if you are prepared to consider it as a game in it's own right and on it's own merits. It isn't your old favourite Final Fantasy game, don't expect it to be the same!

I am about 5 or 6 hours in. Im reading the reviews here and its giving me hope.

cause so far this game is terrible. I only spent $5 on it (promotion for the upcoming FF), and it doesnt seem worth it.

I'm a fan of FF games, but this is my first time playing it on the current generation of systems (ive played 4-9).

I find snow's character to be very interesting. He keeps putting bigger and bigger burdens on himself. The others i could care less.

I keep hoping to hit a town or something where i can explore. For the most part all the movement consist of holding your joystick forward. Pathing is awful, visually there is no way to tell what surfaces you can and cannot walk on, so you basically follow the minimap.

This game feel like a movie where i get to do repetitive fights that only serve to slow down the story and create a possibility of me repeating it. The fight system is kinda neat, but i just dont feel its neat enough to warrant being the only real gameplay so far.

Now that i have gotten all this negativity out of me. Back to playing.
