Why all the haters???

So this is going to be a little bit of a rant. Everyone on this seems to be bashing this game here and there. About the liner storytelling, about this and that.

Their argument typically starts out something like this. "I've been a fan of the franchise ever since ### and ever since VII things have gone downhill. This series used to be about blah, blah, blah."

Now... if you really were a fan, you'd understand that they like to push the boundaries with what they can do each and everytime they make a new game. Would you want Final Fantasies to continue to be 4 light warriors going around to save the crystals and therein save the world for utter chaos and complete destruction? If they constantly went for the same general story, you'd never have your lauded Final Fantasy VII, and the franchise wouldn't have made it very far at all. Admittedly, stock characters are constantly being used in JRPGs, but think about it.... aren't stock characters used in EVERY FORM OF MEDIA???

And I ask you... if this game wasn't as hyped as it was, if the expectation wasn't there, how would you recieve this game? Would it be just another JRPG? Or would you think of this game as an epic story, with a great battle system?

So many people are griping about the whole "no cities" thing. Really? C'mon. Please. Let's be honest. How many of you go around talking to every single person in the towns? Not many. Aside for some cute little scenes in later editions, there is no real purpose for the cities to be there anymore. I got sick and tired of running all over the place in Rabanastre, talking to four or five characters, just to get one silly little item so I can fight the Wind Dinosaur. What do you do in the towns??? Get items and weapons. Problem solved at the savepoints.

And another thing for you "fans" of Final Fantasy. Remember, they do listen to you, and trust me, towns and more of a free flowing landscape will be available to you when the next installment arrives. I think that they made it a big deal by defending it before it even got released over here. Now it's on everyone's consciousness and all they want to do is bitch and complain about anything on the internet. Grow up. Apparently Jay and Silent Bob had it right, that the only thing people ever do on the internet is complain about things and watch porn (of which one I just got done and the other I'm doing right now - hahaha. just kidding about the first one).

If you stood back, stopped looking at every little morsel of information about a game and played it first without looking at the reviews like I did, you'd find yourself thoroughly enjoyed.

Are there better editions of this series? Certainly. Will this be everyone's ultimate FF experience? Certainly not. It would be ultimately impossible to make everyone's favorite FF game each and every time a new one came out. Why do you think that they decided not to bring II, III, and V to America right away... They knew that there wasn't going to be a great market for these games in the states at the time. I'm just happy they they are bringing all their efforts to America nowadays.

Ultimately this is what it is. It is their best effort at making a great story. Do you think you could write a better story for a video game? I challenge you to do so. Get into the video game industry and put SquareEnix out of business becuase everyone wants to play your games becuase they've surpassed Final Fantasy in every way possible. Do you really think that is possible? Most definitely not. 99% of you would be completely lost after a few minutes and give up...

And if the story isn't engaging enough, go back to your 10 minute killfest where the story is so amazing while your shooting random idiots online who are doing thier best to sound like brainless bigots whose pubes haven't even dropped yet. Go back to COD and get another Prestige.

=DOne of the most epic replies I've ever read!=D

Towns do have atmosphere and wonder, but I agree with the OP. Judgement came way too hard and swift upon this game.

reply

The fanbase kept breaking itself since Final Fantasy IV. This is something I personally can't understand.

No matter how good a new Final Fantasy game will be, some idiots will find a reason to hate it.

[deleted]

How in the hell do you people enjoy explorering towns?!?!?! It sounds like you're just wasting time in the game by tallking to random people who say the same thing over and over again. It's pointless.

Rest easy@night-there are devils out there(me)who hunt evil in shadows and mist

reply

It's not a waste of my time, it's something I enjoy doing. I like the interactions of the populace. They will repeat themselves after awhile but the first time or the first few times they'll say something and I like to read those things. Just like I enjoy reading the information in the Datalog and wish they had provided information on the enemies the way they did in XII with more than just stats, actual backstory of sorts.

reply

To me it just seems a little superfluous. A pause in the story to spend an hour talking to everyone. It's nothing more than a break in the action. A sidepoint blocking A and B. This game takes that out.

Don't get me wrong. If there are things to actually do, it's allright. I didn't mind going to the town to play the card game in X-2. But I don't like the search for this guy to find out you've gotta talk to this guy, only so you can get this item and give it to this guy sort of thing.

XII's cities weren't that bad. But the argument over taking them out of this edition is mind boggling.

Honestly, have you ever found yourself thinking, "man, if this game had better towns in it, it would be epic?" Does a town make a game? Hell no. but people are so desperate to hate this game that they're pointing out small problems. It's not like Star Ocean 4... The game that would randomly freeze on just about everyone's Xbox. You CAN say, "man, if this game didn't freeze about once an hour, it would be a really good game." But you can't say the same about the town thing.

If you don't like the characters, get used to it. Archeotypes for characters will be and will always be recycled until video games aren't being made anymore. Even then, those same character bases are going to be used in literature, film, as well as television.

Man, if this game had towns in it, I'd absolutely love it

reply

ok hang on hang on, am i reading this right?, did someone say the main reason they play FF is to explore towns lol?. i mean come on, sure games like VII and VIII were good and had towns to explore but really, maybe they should just make a game where all you do is travel around the world exploring towns, they could call it, Real life.

Final Fantasy has always been about the journey the characters take and the amazing story revolving around it. And guess what?, thats what they were really pushing in this game, therefore they decided a more linear type of game is necessary, while they expanded on FFXII's battle system.

In light of this i accept it and decide to go for the ride, while the older games are great and will always be memorable, gaming changes and we're in 2010 now, time to move on.

"sorry, unlike my credit card rating, i hold very little interest"

Searching the towns is awesome! Remember in The Adventure of Link! Come on! The second Zelda! You could use the towns to find secrets! Without towns, you'd never upthrust! And the same two repeating women and one bearded guy wearing red clothes would sometimes switch it up on you and wear blue! Their sentences they would tell you were awesome. And if you missed it the first time they'd happily repeat it precisely the same for you. They don't talk about much, but they say the same thing a lot!

(I am only joking if anyone is wondering!)

reply

I don't find the lack of towns a game breaker at all. It's simply something I miss. I enjoy the game just fine without them, but I merely came to answer your question about liking exploring towns. If anything makes the game impossible to play it's knowing Hope might open his mouth again.

reply

Well, the whole Hope opening his mouth thing, I'll go with you there. So far my fav's are Sazh and Vanille. They're little trek together was the best so far... besides the super awkward moments from Fran checking L'Cie marks.

I'm in Ch 11 and Hope's starting to grow on my however. They all are. At least every character has a backstory to them, unlike Fran and Panelo from XII. They just seemed to be there for the ride. I didn't really understand that. Panelo was simply there so that there wouldn't be one person in the party in the beginning, and so someone could be rescued in Bhujerba.

The thing with town were that the townspeople gave background information, you also got from them a reaction to your action and the events of the games and information of side quest or secrets. Towns also meant that you could go back. FFXIII there is no going back.Theres only one real place to go and thats Gran Pulse, and theres really nothing there.

reply

I played and won this game and I overall enjoyed it. One minor gripe was the lack of towns, but that is just me. I usually enjoy going from town to town finding new items and meeting the locals. Except in twelve, there is just a limit on how expansive a town is so in a way the lack of towns in this one made up for the overly large towns of twelve.

reply

To me this discussion reminds of the old games like Landstalker, Soleil, Wonderboy in Monsterworld, etc where I used to adore the town exploring aspect.
Since cut-scenes were not possible back then towns gave personality to the game and drove the narration and tale forward.
I loved the previous FF titles although I agree the towns in FF12 were quite expansive.
When I found out that towns werent in FF13 I must admit I was a bit gutted, but so far (im only a few hours in) it hasnt seemed to bother me as much as I thought.

This is only my opinion btw. :)

I'm only halfway done with XIII, but it's probably the worst one I've done in a while.

Now... if you really were a fan, you'd understand that they like to push the boundaries with what they can do each and everytime they make a new game.
The game is a step back. Sure, it has pretty visuals and colors, sound effects and voice acting but...what Final Fantasy hasn't had awesome graphics, visuals, and sound (when taking into perspective the time period they came out). And the gameplay offers NOTHING compared to what the others offered. Side-quests that are all the same damn thing. Lack of control of party members. A stupid-ass AI. Run down linear corridor, fight boss, cut scene, run down linear hallway, cut scene, fight boss, run down linear corridor, fight boss, cut scene. They literally give you no freedom in the game. Even the leveling system, despite looking like a "circle" in the menu is a linear path, with only the rare "+20 HP OR +2 Strength?" It's not like VII with challenging bosses and the 100s of materia combinations to choose from, the numerous classes in the earlier ones, etc.

I mean, imagine XIII on the old NES, where those old FF games used to be. Can you imagine what the game would be like? It'd be a 6 bit wide corridor the entire game.

Would you want Final Fantasies to continue to be 4 light warriors going around to save the crystals and therein save the world for utter chaos and complete destruction?
Only true in the first three Final Fantasy's, and despite XIII's problems, I'd still consider it better than them. But please don't compare a game from today to a game from the 80's.

If they constantly went for the same general story, you'd never have your lauded Final Fantasy VII, and the franchise wouldn't have made it very far at all.
They all go for the "same general story," and that isn't the problem with it. Every FF has protagonist vs Empire/power hungry antagonist.

Admittedly, stock characters are constantly being used in JRPGs, but think about it.... aren't stock characters used in EVERY FORM OF MEDIA???
I don't care about stock characters. Most of the characters in XIII just flat-out sucked.

And I ask you... if this game wasn't as hyped as it was, if the expectation wasn't there, how would you recieve this game? Would it be just another JRPG? Or would you think of this game as an epic story, with a great battle system?
I don't play many JRPGs. Compared to the other FF's and every other JRPG I've done, (Valkyria Chronicles 1 & 2, Resonance of Fate) XIII is mediocre to terrible.

So many people are griping about the whole "no cities" thing. Really? C'mon. Please. Let's be honest. How many of you go around talking to every single person in the towns? Not many.
I do, but that's not the main reason. I want to actually feel like I'm in a diverse, open, and vast world. I want the ability to go to where I want to in the world at some point, to explore all of it. What I don't want is to be forced down a hallway for 9/10 of the game.
I don't particularly like those annoying, tedious things either. However, there are far less of them in VII+ (unless you count sidequests), and even then they are fairly rare in I-VI. Most of them don't even take 5 minutes if you know what you're doing though.

And another thing for you "fans" of Final Fantasy. Remember, they do listen to you, and trust me, towns and more of a free flowing landscape will be available to you when the next installment arrives.
Good. Now if they fix those terrible characters and story, we might finally get a good game out of Square.

If you stood back, stopped looking at every little morsel of information about a game and played it first without looking at the reviews like I did, you'd find yourself thoroughly enjoyed.
Okay. Just let me remove my brain first. Maybe then I could ignorantly pretend XIII has no faults and is a decent game.

Are there better editions of this series? Certainly. Will this be everyone's ultimate FF experience? Certainly not. It would be ultimately impossible to make everyone's favorite FF game each and every time a new one came out.
I don't expect every game to be "the ultimate experience," but XIII is probably the worst I've done since III (not played VI or XII).

Ultimately this is what it is. It is their best effort at making a great story. Do you think you could write a better story for a video game?
Actually, even Square admits it had it's problems.

I challenge you to do so. Get into the video game industry and put SquareEnix out of business becuase everyone wants to play your games becuase they've surpassed Final Fantasy in every way possible.
No I do not. Because I don't even know how to make a video game, and what other people like is none of my concern, although Square has been somewhat struggling lately (compared to the profits and praise they used to rake in).

And if the story isn't engaging enough, go back to a good RPG, like those older FF games and those other, non-linear RPGs where the story is so amazing.
Fixed and will do.

reply

Jesus, did I say all that? hahaha. I haven't even played it since I beat it. 6 months later, I wouldn't necessarily have said those things. Some things, like the towns missing still confuses me why everyone hates it. I wouldn't rate it very highly in the relm of FF titles.

I still do think the story is great, one of the best in the series. This games should have been made into a movie. The linear aspect of the story would have worked well in a movie. The visuals are fantastic, as usual.

The gameplay however isn't as good as I once thought. I think that there could have been better sidequests, and in retrospect, some of the best moments in FF are from interactions with the NPCs... but they don't have to be in cities.

A lot of your thoughts are quite correct, and I stand here with my foot in my mouth. Maybe if Square had a contest on their website to be able to play and test their games to get feedback on what they could have made better.

I think a lot of video game companies get caught up in themselves, which is why some games aren't as good as they could have been. Outside feedback from independant sources make things better. It increases distribution time, but at the same time, if the product is better, isn't it better for everyone?

This game is definately the weakest in the series in my opinion. I've only played from VII onwards. I personally love the towns as they add something to the world, and in VII all the towns (for example Midgar, Junon and Kalm) are all very different to each other and there's a completley different atmophere in each town. Interacting with the NPCs is a great part of the game.

I think the complaints about the lack of cities is linked to the gamplay being too linear. I want to be able to explore a vast world and interact with NPCs rather than just run down a pre set route. Thats just my opinion.

I disagree that the story was great. I just couldn't connect to it as much as I could to VII and VIII. The story is what draws me back to playing those games all over again.

I agree that the visuals are amazing. I think it's like an attractive woman though. Very nice to look at, but if you don't like whats on the inside, you're going to get very bored, very quickly.

Did I ever tell you about my day in Cardiff??

Another thing about the cities in FF7 was that they weren’t particularly big. One never got the chance to get bored by them like in FF12 when you had to run 40+ times from one end of the enormous city of Rabanastre to the other. Towns and cities were fun in FF7 because they came in manageable sizes.

The game is not bad per se, in fact it is a pretty decent RPG, but far from the best ones and it just doesn't feel as a classic Final Fantasy game, which used to be among the best RPG's in the industry for years.

FFXIII lacks the charm and beautiful soundtracks of Nobuo Uematsu, and not only that, songs that were classic for all FF games are not there either.

The leveling system is simply horrible.

Making money is as painful as kidney stones.

The towns suck, the game is so lineal that fails to involve people into the adventure. Part of the best RPG's charms and what makes them great is the fact that they manage to make you feel as part of the world they portray, you go to different towns, with different styles each of them and you can explore them in depth, talk to the people, go to the shops, inside the houses, etc. FFXII has NOTHING of that.

It is extremely technological, other FF games succeeded in balancing the futuristic and the fantasy elements, this game is no longer a fantasy genre game, is more like a 100% sci fi. It is so technological that it feels rather cold and artificial in scenarios and creatures.

It lacks variety, the bestiary is very narrow and all enemies, whether monsters or soldiers look as variations from each other, it does not have originality.

The storyline, while interesting and not as bad as FFXII's, is too complicated, difficult to follow, once you get the hang of it is understandable, however, it takes awhile from the very beginning and it makes it hard for the audience to feel involved in it until much later.

Overall, I give the game a 6/10, like I said, it is an entertaining RPG (specially considering the fact that they seem to be in danger of extinction) but it is far from being a legendary game. It was generally enjoyable and amusing, but for example, doesn't leave me wanting more and I truly have no interest in getting FFXIII versus.

The Final Fantasy games, which once were among my favorites, have dissapointed me greatly since FFXI-FFXIII, the worst thing that could happen for this franchise was the fusion between Square Enix.

It is a pity indeed.

See, I disagree on one point. I though FFXII was really a great game. There was so much to do, and I really enjoyed the story, the hunts, the torture of the hardest guys. I liked everything about it. I've picked it up at least 6 times since i beat it the first time and i haven't played 13 since.

That being said, I can't tell you how many times i dumped the 12 hours into IV.I've beaten that so many times I don't even bother with the ending anymore. 4 adamant armors from those torturous pink puffs, all the weak extra summons that took me like a month to figure out once, so much more. I can still remember playing it for the first time. THAT is the best game ever for me.

I loved the battle system in FFXII, the fact that you could still visit towns and it was not so linear was nice too, and the graphics were amazing and the bestiary was very well done, quite diverse.

But the storyline was awful, too political, too cold, the characters were terrible, Vaan had the charisma of a rock; he is one of the worst main characters ever. Ashe was obnoxious (although she was hot), Penelo was too insignificant, Basch was too uptight. I don't have many complains about Balthier and Fran though, they were the only 2 rescuable chars.

But in this game you never see a meaningful emotional integration among the main characters, they were extremely cold and lacked emotion, you fail to sympathize with them, it's as if: Okay, we are together in this, but don't be on my way!

The summon monsters are extremely useless, they are just eye candy and not necessary either in practice nor storywise. To the point in which it didn't encourage you to make the sub quests to get all of them.

The music is horrible, I still remember the scene where Balthier confronts his father (Cid) and instead of using an emotional or epic score for those scenes, they appeared to used a generic recycled battle song, same to all the scenes that were supposed to be meaningful in the plot.

Overall, I think that FFXII has been the coldest FF to date, sure I liked it as a decent RPG, but for Final Fantasy standards, it was the beginning of the end and when I realized that Square Enix lost the touch. FFXIII had a slight improvement in the storyline, but nothing like the classic epic FF games that we used to wait so eagerly (FFIV-FFX).

From what I hear versus is actually going to have cities and a world map and be more in line with more classic variations of FF. The only thing that is supposed to be even slightly related to XIII is the terminology and things of that nature. However, at the rate things are going it will probably be several years before it gets released when it was supposed to originally be released concurrently with XIII or shortly afterward. Now it looks as if they are bringing out a direct sequel to this one before that one even gets a release date, and from what I understand most of it is scrap left over when they foolishly ported this game over to XBox 360 so that one I am not looking to forward to. I am also sick of the online games as I can not stand MMORP or whatever they are called, those games should have been called Final Fantasy online and not included in the numerical sequence.

I only watched Final Fantasy games over YouTube so far.

FF13 was the first I watched, and so far its still my favorite, at least in respect to combat system. FF13.2 got a much worse combat system and FF13.3 got the worst of them all. FF8 was a good attempt at being even more awful, though. I liked FF7 and FF9 combat systems, rather simple, but some pretty cool ideas in there. Thats all the FF games I checked out so far.

In terms of story, I would say FF9 was the best and FF13 the second best.

The best single character is definitely Lightning.
