Why They Worship Bryan Theory

The people of -- Arizona worship Bryan because he is the one true god. He represents all that is right and good in the world -- our childhood, snuffed out by the mental strain of Tanzi, or adult responsibility. Just as the people tried to rid their town of Tanzi, so do the followers of Bryan try to regain their innocence by crying out against Tanzi and upholding Bryan. Yet, we cannot regain our childhood and trying only makes us more and more frustrated... we can band together as one, but you cannot reclaim what has been lost.

At its earliest stages, the Bryan religion was pure and clean. But as with any religion, it became corrupted along the way, and the acolytes lost the true meaning, turning to violence against those who could not share in the (once pure, now false) vision of Bryan (childhood). We all long for Bryan to be reborn, but most of us are not as devoted.

Why else would they worship Bryan?

GAWD....
What crap from the OP for a crap movie.
If Bryan is "reborn", he will come back as a dried up snake turd in the Arizona desert.
P.T. Barnum said there "is a sucker born every minute" Apparently, too many "Gavin's" as well.

That theory seems to hold some water, seeing as how the writer/director/star has talked numerous times about his life and how it affected him. I could see where he would feel he missed out on his childhood.

But unfortunately that is something that will always be left up to interpretation as the film seemed more interested in the time in the mental facility than anything else. It was kind of like its own little movie inside the whole of the film. The previous actions are just setting this section of the movie up and then it's over.

We never get any clear kind of picture of the Bryan's since the trapped in the facility aspect ended up being the main focus. It's sad because I really wanted to like this movie but it seemed like Landau's personal issues got in the way. He basically acted out his childhood pain. If it helped him move past it great, but how it got translated onto film didn't make for a good one.

If we had gotten to spend some more time with the Bryans I might be able to offer some kind of alternate ideas, but as it stands I think you've got the best interpretation anyone could gleam out of it.
