If youre going to make a docudrama

At least stick to the facts as they happened, don't water them down or shrink back from what really happened like this movie did. What an insipid script, what insipid and generic portrayals. There were lost chances for some extraordinary performances. I guess these actors just couldn't find that depth. I keep thinking that if someone like Glenn Close took on the Gertrude character, she'd have blown it out of the water. But everyone, especially Catherine Keener, just acted tired and bored. And the kids were just by the numbers bad kids. There were no personal or explanatory motivations in any of the characters to show their reasons for how this torture got so out of control, no set up to explain why these people all got so immersed in letting this torture
happen. They just started attacking the poor girl one day based on what? Two comments by a mother and daughter? I don't think so. There was much much more going on and this film just skimmed the surface. Guess it's the difference between good actors vs. great actors and a good script vs. a great script.

I'm sure you're not the only one who has the same issues with this film.

Agreed. What I think fascinates people with crime stories like these is why and how could such horrible violence occur at all? The film sadly didn't attempt to answer these questions. An opportunity missed.
