rip off of the 4400

Does anyone else think this is a complete rip of the USA network's show the 4400??? Where people from the future abducted 4400 people in order to save the world from being destroyed. That's all I thought of when I saw the commercials for this show. Ugh that's ridiculous.

reply

Yeah, and like... Dead Like Me was a rip off of Six Feet Under, cause they were both about people dying.

And Deep Space Nine was a ripoff of Babylon 5, cause, like, they were both space stations.

A show you have never seen, that you only know a tiny but about and already you are calling it a rip off?

Sounds like Fanboy tripe to me.

Okay, let me start by saying that calling this a rip-off of a television show that is currently being made, which in and of itself is not an original idea either, is just plain silly. The 4400 has various premises that harken to a whole bunch of other T.V. shows, movies, books, comic books, radio serials.

Some comic characters that have powers due to alien abduction or alien alteration:

Animal Man(DC)
Ms. Marvel(Marvel)
Dr. Doom(Marvel)-and before you try to correct me or tell me I am wrong, his ability to transfer his mind from body to body comes from an alien race called Ovids.
Every single Eternal and Deviant ever to exist[thanks to the Celestials](Marvel)
Silver Surfer(Marvel)
Terrax(Marvel)
Air Walker(Marvel)
Nova[Frankie Raye](Marvel)
Skrull Kill Krew[technically their powers were derived from ingesting the meat of Skrulls that were forced to live as cows](Marvel)
3-D Man(Marvel)
Green Lantern, the whole Green Lantern Corps(DC)
Power Pack(Marvel)
The Darkstars(DC)
All of the New Blood-if memory serves there were supposed to be like 30 KNOWN New Blood characters(DC)
Ambush Bug(DC)

Hopefully you get the idea...there are A LOT more, but I don't feel like listing more.

As far as the DS9/B5 thing...technically speaking since B5 WAS what DS9 was originally supposed to be-they screwed JMS(yes THE JMS-J. Michael Straczynski to none comic fans) over and went with what it was-I enjoyed both series, not playing favorites...a rip-off of B5.

ummm..."CaLeScA" 4400 is totally different from HEROES. If you read the description it says HEROES is about people with unique abilities and how and what they do with them.

reply

and if you've ever seen the 4400 they also have unique abilites and do things with them. every person has a different ability much like the ones in the commercials for heroes.

reply

As do an insane number of comic book characters, some of whom have already been on both the movie screen and television screen. What is your point? That there are no original ideas? I'd disagree with that. The 4400 central ideas is that those people were taken and somehow changed for the better of mankind. All we know so far of Heroes is that these folks have powers that is all we know. It could be more like the "Jumpstart" from Malibu comics a few years ago(Ultraverse)...We just have to wait and see.

If anything it's a ripoff of Xmen. Basically, from what I saw from the pilot, these people have a genetic "x-factor" that gives them unique powers. I like where the series is headed, and the characters they've introduced so far are pretty interesting. The japanese guy even references X-men when he describes his powers to his friend. I don't really care if the idea has been beat to death, if the story is interesting I'll keep watching it.

if they actually use their powers as heroes then i'm all for this show. i really like the 4400 however, they have powers but really don't do much. I thought the best thing to happen to the show was the nova group, but that ended pretty abruptly. i wish 4400 did a little bit more with their powers instead of just being in the background of this DRAMA. The only real hero was the guy in the 2nd or 3rd episode who actually decided to help people with his ability.

How about the fact that you're all on the wrong thread? This is a different program. See how the description says "real life stories of ordinary people?" (paraphrase). Do you all think that "real life stories" means guy who can fly or fat asian guy who can stop clocks? Holy *beep* no one on Earth can read anymore, you see.

The 4400 has nothing to do with aliens.. and if anything I would have referenced Rising tsars as something the 4400 seemingly borrowed heavily from.

reply

And the best part about that is the big blue ball from which the 4400 arrive in. I mean it looks just like Flash from Rising Stars. only a different color.
but who cares, no matter where the idea came from, NBC is just gonna toast the show like they did, Surface. It's a concept that a lot of people won't like because it's too fantastic.

reply

Actually Deep Space Nine is a ripoff of Babylon 5, as Paramount passed on B5 it to make DS9 knowing everything about B5, but branding it with startrek.

Heroes is more a ripoff of Rising Stars if anything.

reply

It's not a rip-off of anything. It's just jumping into the whole superhero genre like The 4400 did. Haven't you noticed, ever since X-Men was a hit at the box office, hollywood realized that people with super powers brings in a very large fan base, which obviously means money.

I have to agree with you CaLeScA. NBC is going to try and gain viewer ship based largely in part to the success of the 4400. Remember when the X-Files was hot they came out with the Others?

I'd say heroes is a rip off of Mutant X..........

reply

even if that was the case, heroes seems like hundreds of times better, go see the pilot it was amazing.

It seems to be common these days to see a movie with a certain premise, then in two months or have a wave of TV shows/ other movies with the same premise. This is one of the wave of premises centered around how superheroes find their place in society (See Batman Begins, Superman Returns, My Super Ex-Girlfriend, etc.). The same thing happened when the Ring came out, a wave of teenage psychological horrors appeared on the horizon. This show looks promising though. And the girl who played Kairi from Kingdom Hearts is in it.

This feels a lot like a comic book than anything else.

4400 had some moments, but it went downhill after one season. This show seems to have a better structure and a bit more interesting characters.
