Her mother hanging up.

in your view, why do you think she did that?
I've heard a few theories, (anger, shock, not wanting anything to do with Tracey anymore),
just wondering what the majority of people thought about this.

reply

I thought that she just didn't care anymore because of Sonny's disappearance.

well actually....her parents assumed she was on crack...as stated by her psychiatrist. Sometimes parents first reaction to a drug addicted kid is to throw them out(disown them). Im pretty sure after everything that had been going on(tracey running away/sonny missing)she just didnt want to deal with her(who she assumed was a drug addicted runaway).

This scene stood out for me as well (amongst many affecting scenes). This scene and the 'bedtime story' scene when Tracey was younger were pivotal scenes I think; but I still can't say for sure what they mean. The best I can suss out is that the mother was both overwhelmed and angry that first Tracey seems to have been at least partially responsible for Sonny, AND she then chooses to run away. But the scene was so quietly (and then not so quietly) violent, that I think there must have been more to it.

reply

Not to influence you with my own opinions or anything, but the book version (of which the film was based on) made it quite clear that half of the things Tracey's parents said or did were complete lies and fantasies that Tracey made up to either ignore reality or make sense of it.

Her mother most likely didn't hang up the phone on her-- but her mother DID neglect Tracey for years and blames her husband's side of the family (specifically, Tracey's paternal grandmother who had some genetic defects that caused Sonny and Tracey to have mental defects) for the family's problems. With one kid thinking he's a dog all the time, and the other in the psych's office and running away from home every other day the mother has been taking her disappointment out on Tracey.

When Tracey ran away from home after she 'lost' Sonny, the scene mentioned implies that Tracey's mom would rather not have to deal with her kids (hence her hanging up in such a blatantly guilty manner). It's most likely Tracey's fantasy, as she really has no idea what her mother would be doing on the other end of the line. Hanging up the phone on her daughter reinforces Tracey's thoughts (delusions?) that she wasn't at fault for Sonny's disappearance-- her lousy mother was.

As such, whether the mother actually hung up or not is something the reader/viewer can never know for certain. But it would be EXTREMELY convenient for Tracey if she can demonize her mother for being a bad mother, especially when dealing with her own culpability after Sonny's lost.

HEY BABY LOOK AT MY EYES. I LOVE YA BUT I HATE YOUR LIES.

i think her mom was just kind of crazy cause she was standing there and picked the phone up all fast like she was anxious to answer and then hangs up...? it kind of confused me. and so yeah i think she was just crazy.

reply

Well, I think she did that because in the moment, she was eager to pick up the phone to see if it was either Sonny or Tracey. The mother is worried sick about both of her children.

Then she hears Tracey's voice, and reality comes back. Tracey is fine, and she's calling, but then she realizes that she's upset and angry at her, for making her scared, and holding her responsible for her son's disappearance.

reply

I was about to chime in but bingo! jeebusenroute, beat me to my two cents. But I guess, I'll expand upon that perspective.

The mother is glad to know that Tracey is okay. Even with all the anger Tracey put her through, she still loves her and will always be the life she created. However the relief is overcome once again by the overwhelming anger and anxiety and she just couldn't deal with it all.

Her daughter is old enough, smart enough, alive and can speak. In her mind, she didn't need to take care of her in the moment.

An alternate way to look at it, was that it was all in Tracey's head like many other events in the picture.
