the story seems to quickly turn into a story about Tracey's troubles and ignores the missing brother

NO i think were left to think that Sonny fell into the freezing (a snow storm is coming) river while she was in the car making out. The whole movie seemed to be about Traceys mental break down because she wasnt watching her brother and he died.

Yeah....that really bugs me. Did he die? Drown? Seems pretty important.

I agree, Sonny drowned but Tracey refused to accept it. So the entire movie she is searching for a missing brother who will never turn up. I thought it was brilliant that we don't know this until the end, and even then it's not spelled out for us.
