Amazing show, so glad I found it

Just finished the series and absolutely loved it. Blown away by how consistent it was - it never felt like it was being made up as it went along like other shows - it was clearly planned out from the beginning. It felt like an epic James Elroy type noir story, so intricate and thought out. Great acting throughout, some really nice touches, a great finale. Absolutely brilliant.

I'm on about my fifth run-through. I've bought at least 4 copies of the DVDs to give to friends.
It truly is now my all-time favorite show.

Have you listened to the commentaries, rabbitmoon? I've never come across a box set that actually has more commentaries than there are episodes!

I'm assuming the countless commentaries you are referring to are those that came with the original DVD. Unfortunately the DVD that followed didn't include half the commentaries as the original. Shame. Those commentaries were almost as entertaining as the show. You can tell the cast really enjoyed themselves.

These days it may not matter much considering folks are watching the show through Netflix and on the internet.

Hi - no I haven't heard the commentaries - I never managed to get a dvd set. I'm in the UK and I think its only on region 1 - which isn't a problem, just a case of sourcing the right version. Do you have any pointers in knowing which is the version with the commentaries - subtle differences to box or anything like that? I'd love to watch the whole series again.

Oops, sorry, I didn't think about what region you were in.
I just looked at the Amazon UK site, and it only has...

Day Break: Complete Series [DVD] [Region 1] [US Import] [NTSC]

I don't mind getting region 1, the issue is which version has the commentaries?

reply

Ummm, well, there's really only one version available, right?
I mean, it was originally released as a 4-disc set, but when that company went teats-up, another company released it as a 2-disc set (lower image quality, of course), but they're both identical in terms of content.

That's what I mean. I'd prefer the 4 disc set for the better image/sound quality, and wondered if there were any subtle differences to the box. Its really annoying that they tried to save money by condensing it onto two dvds!

reply

I was lucky in that I was able to obtain two copies of the original 4-disc set after the 2-disc one came out.
(One for US$24.99 back in 2009, and the other for US$9.99 just a couple of months ago)
But those were at a store that specializes in hard-to-find stuff (http://www.amoeba.com/)
Amazon UK only carries the newer release, I believe.

I never would have known this show ever existed if it weren't for the electricity in my apartment building going out last night. I went over to see my family and we wanted something to watch and pass the time. We came across Day Break, but I'd never heard ot it and no one could remember the premise of the show, so we watched the first episode.... and BAM. Now I'm speed-watching the rest of the series on the internet.

Wild that I never knew this show existed while it was on, but then again this is ABC we're talking about and most of the time they couldn't network their way out of a paper bag. Maybe if ABC had given the show some marketing it would have survived.

Glad you discovered it! Its also one of the few shows that tells a complete story, it doesn't write itself as it goes ending up like some weird meandering thing. They thought of so much, ahead of the writing, so the end episodes are really rewarding and take into account things that happened at the beginning. Excellent.
