Very last scene in episode 13 of Daybreak

The very last scene had me wondering what exactly was going on there, with the guy who said he has been reliving the day also watching Hopper and Rita. Now he is cleaned up and wearing a suit.

Any ideas or theories on what the deal was with that scene.

Well, in my opinion it just the same thing as with other people, every good thing Hopper did had a positive consequence. I just didn't understand the point of that guy in the series, was he only to make Hopper feel he had something wrong physically or did the guy have some other meaning? Season 2? :)

reply

I was wondering what happened to him, because we never saw him after the "I shouldn't have bit you" line. So yeah, I think he's just happy that his day is now also over.

I was under the impression they were trying to make you think he had something to do with why Hopper's day kept repeating. I have to say I just finished watching them and the episodes were great, but such a let down to not be told why his day kept repeating in the first place.

I think it was a good idea to keep the time loop explaination a secret. It makes the show more mysterious and the ending with Jared standing there left all kinds of open opportunities for the show.

Just like this thread, everyone has all these ideas about what Jareds role was, and everyone is coming to one conclusion or the other, which adds a little allure to the show.

I just finished watching with my brothers last night and we were all puzzled by that last scene. I was wondering why they ended with a random shot of a Dennis Miller impersonator. It wasn't until coming to this board that I actually knew who that was.

The reason it was written that way was to add some closure to that guy as well. In one of the earlier episodes they stated he was successful before getting that "disease" and he managed to help himself, as did Hopper

reply

I believe that they were thinking of leaving a couple of trapdoors for a second season. However, because this was canceled midway through, I doubt that'll happen.

i like the idea that him getting bitten by that guy made him repeat the days. that's pretty interesting :)

I like the biting the time loop onto another person. Sort of like becoming a werewolf, but instead a time lord.

Then Brett's character would have had to bite someone to get rid of it. And so on. Amusing to think about.

reply

Jared didn't bite Hopper on day 1. Hopper had already repeated a couple of days before Jared bit him. Jared told Hopper that they were alike - Hopper thought he meant the time-loop and then Jared bit his arm and told him "we all taste like chicken."

Jared was going through repeating days for ALONG time. Remember the reference he made to his beard. Also remember his appearance, scruffy looking and not well kept. He looked like this in every scene he was in.

At the end of the show we can see that his days have stopped repeating as well. A refreshing thought and a confirmation that it indeed was a different day. Just look at him!

I've just finished the DVD set; I get the impression that Jared was either responsible for the time loop, or a 'guardian angel' sent by those who were. Clarence from "It's a Wonderful Life," if you will. His look said that he was involved in Hopper's hopping, was pleased with the result, and looked forward to Season Two.

And WOW! I did not recognize him as the same actor who played the ersatz 'Kirk' character in ST:TNG's first season.

reply

Yeah... I got that 'guardian angel' type vibe from him. Like he was partly responsible for the loops. I wonder what the complete mythology for the show was meant to be...

I agree and would add the following...

Jared was the second oldest person in the Bible, being 962 when he died, and his name seems to reference something that would happen later in his lifetime; specifically, the descent of the fallen angels to Earth.

Maybe the writers are suggesting that:

(a)Jared never died and is now over 6,000 years old, working for the Big Guy...
(b)One of the angels, fallen or otherwise, took his name (maybe to honour it) and works, a la Clarence, to correct cosmic injustice...
(c)As with the ending of Quantum Leap, maybe The Big Guy him/her/it-self is giving One Good Man the opportunity to correct many wrongdoings, I lost count of how many people were avenged, cleared, caught or saved over the two days...

I personally, though I have no 'faith', would like to believe it was the Big Kahuna himself... (after all, he is credited as Surfer Dude, not Jared...)

Loved this show, so much too... genius scriptwriting.
