Iceland's Silvia Night

What do you think of her? When i saw the semi-final i thought she was some lunatic who couldn't sing - but her lyrics really made me laugh. (Despite how much they mocked the contest)

Apparently she was also really abusive to the other acts and staff at the contest. But i then heard that she's a character performed by that woman, and so acted up as the character would. Whats your opinion on her? Did she go too far? What do you think of the song?

reply

I thought the song was good, but she didn't do a great job singing it. It should definitely have gone through to the final. I didn't think the voting would necessarily reflect the uproar of booing in the venue, but it must have...
What did she do to offend everyone?

reply

I didn't think she was a particularly good singer either - she sounded like Baby Bop on steroids

Apparently, when people started to boo her, she yelled "f-ing amateurs" or something to that affect, but the audience thought she said "f-ing Greeks" which as you can imagine, went down really badly in Athens...

Also, people thought her song mocked the contest. She sang something like how great she was and how lucky people were that she was 'saving' the contest by being in it.

I also read somewhere she openly called the Dutch entry 'whores' and was generally bitchy to the other contestants.

But despite all the trouble she caused, she actually came 13th in the voting process, so she very nearly went through to the final

Someone said Silvia is a character performance, but i still think she went over the top.

reply

Well, she apparently did go over the top, doing damage to her own interests.
I think the Eurovision audience can handle a certain amount of irony, after all Lithuania did quite well telling everyone to "vote, vote, vote!", but the (joke?) arrogant personality thing must have ruined her chances...

reply

It probably didn't do her too many favours in the contest, but then again, she did get a lot of publicity from it - so in a way, it might have given her career a boost internationally...

Lithuania were good, but their telling everyone they were the winners was good natured and playful. But then again, the audience decided to boo them too during the final, so i guess it depends on what audience you get!

No song has ever been booed in the history of the ESC, and then we get two of them in 2006!

reply

the only previous occasion of booing in the ESC was actuallty Belle and the Devotions (UK 1984) in Luxembourg, some say due to the backing singers blatantly miming and having their backs purposely to the audience during their bits, some say due to the ridiculous day-glo outfits, others say an anti-British backlash after footie hooligans trashed Luxembourg after a Euro 84 qualifier the previous November. This may not have happened had it been in another country?

reply

I don't think she went too far. I thought the whole thing was just funny. I guess you'd have to understand the humor to appreciate it for what it was.
I thought her performance was pretty good, she should have gone to the final at least. She was funny.

reply

I think the fact that many didn't know she was an actress was the funniest part. Her song is great, and should have been put through to the semi-finals, if only people could learn to take a joke. But I don't know about her live performance, it was good and all, but she was a bit off at a few bits.
