Worth watching??

When I was in South-Korea this summer I webt to the cinema and saw a trailer for this film. I asked my friend what it was bout, since I couldn't understand Korean. He told me about the massacre and it really shocked me. I was very interested to find out more and we went to the memorial ground in Gwangju. There it hit me even more since you can see shots of the demonstrations, soud recordings and of course the burial ground. 6 months later I come by this film om imdb and I'm wondering if it's worth the watch, since the opinions seem to differ. Please let me know!

I would say it's worth a look, definitely, in terms of giving you a good overview of the historical events, along with an interesting, if somewhat prosaic, storyline. It doesn't really break much ground cinematically, but if you want to get a good idea of what happened when during the May 1980 in Gwangju, it's a pretty good summation.

historically speaking, there's not much explaining WHY these events happened, only that they did. it begins with a textual preface that doesn't go very far into the events preceding the incident. from what i know about the incident, it's fairly spot-on from the citizen's standpoint. i'm one of the types who likes to learn both sides of the story, and this one only focuses on the citizens of gwangju. it portrays the army mostly as a group of automatons lead by a commander incensed with the destruction of innocents. there's actually much more to the story than this movie shows.

story-wise, i'm not sure if the romance plot is actually necessary in a history-related movie. reminds me of pearl harbor in that respect, except that this movie wasn't directed by michael bay. the characters are diverse and lovable, from the shin-ae's wise father to the comic relief of in-bong. there are motifs of revenge, redemption, and reconciliation.

i would prefer to watch a documentary on the subject (or read a book - i recommend michael breen's "the koreans"), but for what it's worth, this isn't a bad start. not the best movie i've ever seen, but it's not completely worthless either.

i have to agree with you on all points. i saw this two nights ago at the new york korean film festival and although there were moments of slice of life comedy, i wasn't impressed overall. i think this may be a korean counterpart to a pearl harbor here. it simplifies everything and the characters lack any depth. lately, i've been starting to see this trend of overplaying the slapstick style actors in korean films. for example, the cab driver and his customer becoming friends throughout the course of the movie. but man, they can really tone down their acting. at least the main actor was good at the subtle comedy. in something like a king and the clown, these kind of stereotypical stock characters can work (and it did), but here, it just makes the behind-the-scenes people seem amateur. by my post, people may think this is a comedy about war. i think the funny slice-of-life scenes serve a similar function to that of another movie i saw last year called "once in a summer" with lee byung-hoon. it lightens things up in the beginning so you can grasp the contrast once things get really sour, which makes it all the more powerful. unfortunately, didn't quite work in this movie. when the killings started happening, i just couldn't get invested. it's too bad really, in that i mean a very mediocre film shouldn't downplay a tragic event that's clearly important to south korea still. tae guk gi may have been a korea-hollywood style blockbuster flick, but it was done quite well despite its lack of any real complexity story-wise. i'm not too knowledgeable about korean films but other great war/conflict movies are letters from iwo jima, downfall, the lives of others, das boot, and sure i'll throw in children of men even if it's fictional =)

Having just watched the movie I thought I'd add a few thoughts. I know this thread is old though!

I think the movie is interesting to watch because it's depicting history and if this was fictional I'd say it was entertaining though not great. However it seemed to melodramatic with sub-plots and characters that didn't strike me as appropriate for a movie pitched about a famous protest/political event. More context would have been good too.

If anyone has seen A Petal, which is also about this incident, I'd like to know what they thought of it and that is worth seeing.
