Missing train cars

Could someone please xplain this to me. I know it must be obvious but I am not getting the part when Roy and Jess find out they are the only ones left on the train, except for Grinko and his guy. What the hell happened to the other cars with all the other passengers? thx

Ben Kingsley and his partner commandeered part of the train. It's not clear how they did that, and at the time we think they are the police, but then when we find out at the end that they are not, it really does seem to strain credibility that they were able to do this.

Grinko is a police officer, albeit a corrupt one.

What I find weird is that the other train cars disappeared. When the second train crashes into theirs at the end, there are no cars between them. This is pretty peculiar considering there's only two ways you can go the tracks, and it's not like they switched railroads or anything.

This is still intriguing me. But what I think is, the officer should have used his powers to separate the cars, possibly asking to transfer suspects. But is it this easy in Russia? Annoying!
But let me ask this. What was the whole point of evacuating and separating the cars? Was that needed at all? They could have easily arrested them and taken off the train.
