Grinko's watch working after traincrash

Grinko's (Kingsley) watch, wich he had given and then gotten back from his later diseased son, starts ticking after the train crashes. That's a funny detail, but obviously also essential symbolism. I don't get it fully, though. Anyone have assosiations on this?
