Ewan walks away from 20 million dollars?

In the Madrid park scene (Retiro park?) where Jackman gets shot, Ewan leaves both brief cases, each with $10 million. Walks away.

Are we to understand that Ewan's shakey love has so redeemed and purified him that he can walk away from material things? This from a guy who concieved a revenge plan that involved tricking the police, buying a fake passport underground, adopting the new identity, travel to Madrid, and careful timing and watching of Jackman? All that and then he leaved the money.

In a dull, shallow film, the stupidity of this detail manages to stand out.

Please correct me if I missed something because I'd be happy to be mistaken.

Deception is what Air France is showing free on transatlantic flights so at least I didnt' waste any money. And when you're stuck on a flight you can't say you wasted time either, sort of.

The same thing cought my mind too, but I wasn't so lucky, I watched it in the cinema ):
_____________
You're entitled to your opinion but I've really never seen a movie like this.

There was no reason not to take the money. His identity as Jonathan was taken by Wyatt, and since he was dead, he could get away clean — with the money. The only link that remained between the two of them was the co sign for bank account. But with 10 or 20 million dollars you can get far far away from all that.

The only reason I could think of for leaving the money is that the bills could be marked. An investigation into the death of Wyatt (as Jonathan) could make it harder to spend the money. But again, with 10 or 20 million dollars and being an accountant, I'm sure he would've figured something out.

Oh well, it's just one of the stupidities of this movie.

She obviously shot him so that he wouldn't shoot her. She knew that he was capable of doing so and that he would because of how she reacted in the hotel so she went away when he was in the bank to get a gun.

reply

She killed Wyatt because when she followed them to the park, Wyatt had a gun and was going to kill Jonathon for real.
Wyatt got his just deserts..

I believe Jonathon didn't take the money so he could start a new life.
Perhaps that was more important to him the money. Money doesn't always bring happiness, especially the ill gotten gains of that money.

I know a lot of people didn't like the film, but I did.
So there were some holes in the plot and some parts were predictable, I still thought it was s good film, and the acting by Ewan was excellent.

10 millions fits in 1 case, they are only 10000 papers!

reply

$10 million in 100's would be 220 lbs. Not so easy to carry around in a briefcase. A 500-euro note is worth $630.

reply

Anyone who comes to IMDB to read a movie message board BEFORE watching the movie is such a total dipsh!t, plain and simple. Blaming a poster for revealing a stupid spoiler is SO lame. Just get the fock out of here already!

reply

I'm terribly sorry, but you can't spoil a movie that SUCKS!

I asked the doctor to take your picture so I can look at you from inside as well.

reply

Why go to the threads of a film you havent seen?.. maybe you should expect spoilers! mate...

reply

Maybe to see its rating and see if it is worth watching. The title was pretty stupid and should have been marked as spoiler. Some people may not actually have to read the thread, the title alone which show below the main IMDB page ruin it for someone.

The whole ending of movie was plain stupid.

First big nonsense was that Ewan went in park with killer. Of course gun came out.
Of course that one of most used clichés came out ('sudden' and 'unexpected' shooting of shooter in last moment). After that, I really did not care about further nonsenses. So, leaving money in park... Why not. Script writer already left any sense for logic and reality.

reply

yeah the movie as a whole was pretty mediocre...to say the least.

As for the money goes....we are not sure if he left it there, or whether he went bk for it after he saw her leave.

It could have been the director wanting to show us that for her, ewan was ready to give up on 20 million.

But again, we don't see ewan leaving the park completely. It could have been just a 20 sec run back. And seeing as how there was no response to the gunshot, probably no1 would have intercepted the dead body/money before ewan returned.

reply

crap crap dumb dumb... 3/10 for me... don't get why it's rated so high??!

pls do us all haters for the movie a favor and RATE IT DOWN! Another movie 'conned' thanks to imdb :(

No person in his right mind would walk away from that money. He is an expert in accounting and taxation, he would have figured out a way to clean the money.

reply

Why leave 20 million when he was going to take the 10 anyways? It ruined the movie that I thought was all right before hand. Bumped from a 6/10 to a 5/10 IMO.
And also, why didn't we see anyone else during that scene?

"Let's go somewhere quiet". Since when is a park in the middle of the day a quiet place? And where was all the other people and cops in Madrid? It's not exactly a small town.

reply

Simple. For the same reason he put the passport in Wyatt's (as Jonathan)pocket.

Jonathan is now a wanted man for the theft of $20 million, the murder of a wall street accountant, and the building supervisor.

Now jonathan shows up dead, in spain, with all of the money.
Case closed. The "bad guy" is dead. The money returned.

THATS the twist... Ewan McGregor walks away, as wyatt, with a new life.

It all falls to crap as a plot of course, when someone gets the next of kin to identify the body... but this movie had enough plot holes built in.. I wont add to them here :)

reply

Only one problem with this theory...Hugh Jackman's got a bullet in his chest and surely Ewan is the prime suspect. "They got in a fight over the money, X shot Y, panicked and ran" is probably what the police would think.

I think the reason he left the money is because of the same old tired Hollywood cliche - he has now found "love" and wants to leave all his "tainted" sinful ways behind. Its a moral point they are making, or think they are making. YAWN!

If you dont want the money, take it all and drop it off at the nearest charity, but leaving it in the park for the next random shmuck to collect just to prove a point (and a dumb point at that) is just plain stupid. It did kind of ruin the ending for me.

But I didn't think the film was that bad. Yes, predictable etc, but with Hollywood thrillers this is pretty much the norm so I was expecting as much.

reply

I'm sure whoever is brought in to identify the body (police, next of kin etc.)they would be fooled by the glasses and the changed hairstyle;)

reply

Well, at the end of the movie he was in a nice suit and seemed to have no worries at all. That led me to believe he went back and grabbed the money. No one would have just left it there.
