Spoiler

He had a moment of realisation at how his heavy handed 'forced teaching' approach had simply made the boys feel humiliated and 'not good enough'. He realised how his similar approach to 'fixing' Heather's self esteem problem had also made her feel worse. He finally understood that he was responsible for it all going wrong.

the issue was negativity & misanthropy, not race(dammit!).

While it was a good message about how destructive negativity can be, what that boy did was inexcusable. It wasn't REALLY the main character's fault.
