DRINKING PROBLEM?

I don't get it. Why is this guy have a supposed drinking problem? Where is his drinking causing him trouble, besides this ex wife not wanting him to drink? No drinking on the job....WHICH he does quite well. No evidence of passing out, drinking and driving....hangovers.........

I know that some are quick to label ANY drinking as a problem ( do you drink to catch a buzz?? Really?), but if TS character is supposed to have a problem, it's not very well presented, IMO. Maybe they are afraid od making the character less appealing, I don't know. But, you have to have at least SOME unpleasantness associated with the booze before people can begin to see it as a problem......BESIDES the opinion of an ex wife (. And I don't see any evidence that the drinking was the cause of his wife leaving, in fact, there is evidence that the drinking started AFTER she left him.

Well put - I've been wondering the same thing through three movies. There is a background story given - he was fired from the LAPD for drinking on the job. Absolutely NO details given, if was a big problem, but surely a risk. So presumably after that he drew a firmer line about no drinking at work and while driving. With what we see in these stories, he seems to have things under control and enjoy good Scotch.

But now - a police chief is really on 24/7 so I can see where your friends would be concerned that you would be at risk, or risk others, when called during drinking hours. And some clues I think I saw -- that he was worried and knew he should stop at times but couldn't resist one more glass... So if Jesse himself thinks he has a problem, that's good, but the movies aren't really giving the viewers a good picture.

This particular movie isn't the best example and assuming it's just the opinion of his ex wife is wrong. Movies of this series that came before clearly showed how he was FIRED from his job with the LAPD for drinking on the job. Um... pretty sure that's considered "causing trouble". A drunk/addict will lose friends, family, possessions, drivers license, everything before losing their job because it pays for their drug of choice.

Another example is from the prequel (Night Passage) where it shows him getting the job as police chief of Paradise. He showed up to the interview reeking of alcohol. He even was aware he should not have been hired. Being a functioning drunk doesn't make it less unpleasant.

Considering how strong your opinion is on the subject of a drinking problem I'm assuming you have a problem and don't want to admit it. And that you've never experienced the pain of a family member or close friend being addicted to know how devastating it can be and how tenuous sobriety is.

The people you idolize wouldn't like you.

Uhm.....no....I simply stated the movies I watch, his drinking wasn't a big deal. I've got a problem....and I admit it.......if he was drinking on the job, so does he, it simply wasn't mentioned in the movies. But, if he can control his drinking, then HE DOESNT HAVE A PROBLEM. IN ALCOHOLISM, THE DRINK CONTROLS YOU. Simply drinking more than what makes others comfortable is those peoples problems, not the drinkers.
