Why does this movie feel like it doesn't belong?

This movie feels to me like it doesn't belong in the MCU for some reason and I don't know why. It's not just the actor change because it felt like this before the Avengers came out. Any thoughts?

It was rushed into its release date. The director wanted Mark Ruffalo, but Marvel went with Edward Norton because they had an unfinished script and he offered/wanted to rewrite it and work on it during production. They basically got a free 'production writer' and a star all in one.

It was originally conceived as a sequel to the 2003 Hulk but re-worked into a full reboot with Norton's rewrites.

It originally had a stronger SHIELD presence, but Norton toned it down with his re-writes.

The quick production schedule resulted in not only sort of 'forcing their hand' to go with Norton as a star/writer, but it also rushed post-production and some shots had to be cut because they couldn't get completed in enough time...while plenty of shots IN the movie have a rather 'unpolished' look to them.

Tonally, this film was not 100% consistent with Iron Man, and after Iron Man was a huge hit, ALL of the other films not only matched the tone that mixed drama and humor so seamlessly, but also the overall color palette of Iron Man, which is on the brighter and more vibrant side while The Incredible Hulk skews dark visually and tonally.

Of course...the perfect solution to everything would have been.

Settle on the May 2008 release for Iron Man, and aim for a April-to-August 2009 release for The Incredible Hulk.

That gives them an entire year to work on the script, as well as adjust the film to respond to the positive Iron Man reception, AND gives them more freedom to potentially cast Mark Ruffalo the first time around.

If they simply hadn't been so bullish about getting this film out in 2008, virtually all of the problems with the film would have been fixed.

So Ruffalo was first choice (by director, at least) was he? Hadn't heard that before. Interesting...

All for a box of chocolates...

Sure you don't have it mixed up with Hulk 2003? It was an early MCU movie yes, but it defineltly feels at home in the mcu maybe a bit closer to the tone of some of the tv stuff.

The characterizations are slightly different, the origin is inconsistent in The Avengers one scene said trying to recreate Captain America's serum other Tony Stark saying his accident should've killed him which makes sound like he didn't experiment on himself.

It was made right at the beginning, before they knew what the all encompassing feel of the movies were to be. Every other movie was made in the wake of Iron Man, so they benefited from being made reactively to what made Iron Man such a success. This movie didn't have that luxury. Not that I find anything at all wrong with this movie, but stylistically it does stick out simply because it was made to be its own thing.
