Do the national guard not carry side arms?
Seriously. It's like their rifle was the only weapon they had.
shareSeriously. It's like their rifle was the only weapon they had.
shareApparently they don't do a lot of things like...
keep their weapons with them at all times
wear their hair in military regulations
stay in squad formations when attacking hostile forces
But they DO...
all have expert training in mountain climbing
use real ammunition in close quarters excercises instead of blanks
have the famous Jet Jackson on their squad
This movie gave a great representation of the real national guard...sarcasm
Well the film is obviously 100% realistic and based on real military procedure though.
I loved the ludicrous left-open-for-a-sequel ending, and the lackluster lazy f!ck you to the government at the end, where the camera swept out and everything went infra red and it was sooooooooo isolated. Pity the mutant broke poor pregnant Missy's phone.
Just cuz you get them big udders don't mean you're nuthin special!
Does this national guard not carry brains?
shareallow me: as a member of the military (infantry specifically) i will just say i'm absolutely astounded at the protrayal of the military in this movie. too much to even start, really. but, to answer the question, most standard ground personell would only carry a rifle. the only people who would have sidearms are primarily staff sergeants (e-6) and above (to include officers), otherwise mainly gunners in a machinegun team...
shareThe portrayal of the military in this movie is embarrasing. The makers of this movies obviously made no attempt whatsoever to try to learn anything about the military before making their movie revolve around a military unit.
It probably would've been more realistic if it were a group of volunteer "search and rescue" from the sheriff's department of whatever New Mexico county they could've placed this in.
As for the entire barren landscape they wanted to pass off as a military reservation, they could've retconned by saying it was "former" and handed back to local control.
It was ridiculous, but otherwise the movie was watch-able from about the middle on. I loved the sergeant treating them like they were in their second week of basic training, marching them around singing, punishing the private by making him pull latrine guard ... that was absurd. The rock climbing was also really dumb. The "training exercise" in the beginning was off the rails ... almost made me turn it off.
But to the OP, no, soldiers do not carry side arms, just rifles.
E6 and above? Really? Is this a change which occurred after I got out (I was RA from 98 - 02 and NG from 02 - 06), because I never saw a squad leader carrying an M9. I had one as a Combat Medic (along with my rifle) from the time I was E1 until I got out as E6, but the only infantry NCOs who ever carried one in any unit I was in was the First Sergeant.
sharei seriously rekon i could have done a better job bymyself in fighting those mutants. they looked pathetic and had no clue in what was going on, they never watched their backs, they always seperated wtf is this crap, make it more realistic, they were very unaware and unalert which pissed me off aswell
shareNo most dont carry side arms as somone already stated...
This is because Handguns would be useless on a real battlefield anyway due to their huge inaccuracy at medium to long range, small clips and lack of stopping power...
As a former tanker, I can only comment that armored units had pistols, and military police. I served from 85-89 and we still had the M16A1 and the colt M1911. The reason for the pistols was space conservation in the tank. We also had 1 M3 grease gun, which has been replaced by the M4. The 1911 replaced by the 92 beretta.
