Everyone bitching about the rape scene.....

So basically you all are saying you were horrified bu something you saw in a horror movie? What did you expect?

reply

I think it's horrifying because rape is real, Mutants aren't (as far as we know). Realistic things in a horror film, or any film, is always much more terrifying than anything made up, because it could really happen.

reply

I think you make a good point.

reply

Agreed. And anyone who expects politically correct or sensitivity in a movie with these themes needs to do some research before they see a movie if they are that sensitive to horror in a horror movie. They showed how these guys breed, they didnt show gratuitous bare skin like they could have, I thought it worked well.

I love the horror genre, but it bothers me that there's always at least one creepy guy on every rape/revenge film board saying something like this.

I will never understand the "we want more graphic rape scenes" crowd.

Personally, it was more comedic than horrifying, but it's still, a) distasteful and b) serves no purpose whatsoever.

Why comedic?

reply

It's not a book, it's a movie. You know, in which you see stuff. The rape scene wasn't graphic enough, the actress should have gone all the way. I mean we already know the "story" before it begins, so why not just have a black screen...

Its a horror movie. The only rule of appropriate material should be the scenes in a horror movie should not be real. Meaning it is okay to portray any objectionable act or scenario as long as the scenario/acts did not actually occur during the filming process. Okay to act out rape, murder, animal cruelty as real as possible. But not okay to film an actual rape, murder, animal cruelty act and say this is the film.

I don't believe that it was .. I don't watch any movies that I know that shows rape .. As a woman if offends me .. maybe you would feel the same if 95 % of the people who were actually raped were men .. But then again , maybe not .. I saw the beginning on this tonight and decided to come here to check it out .. but after watching the beginning and reading a few things here , switched the channel .

What I can't believe is why the rape scene is so controversial, especially when pit up against the scene where a nude woman (presumably kidnapped, raped, and held captive for 9+ months) is tied to a bed bloodily birthing a mutant baby in close-up and having it graphically ripped out by the hillbilly mutant father, followed by another close-up of the umbilical cord itself being pulled out with his bare hands.

Yeah, you're right. I'd forgotten how vile that scene is. Really there just for shock value, moreso than the rape scene. Definitely in my TOP 10 of Movies That Have Too Many Inexcusable Scenes of Nastiness.

I suppose that even in the most horrible of situations anyone would still choose life over death.

Gotta have one hell of a career to have an actual drive to want to live through something like that for it.

Both the birth scene and the rape scene were quite brutal and upsetting. I give the filmmakers a lot of credit for not pulling their punches and going right for the throat.

I've been chasing grace/ But grace ain't easy to find

Horror movie horrifies. People bitch. Go figure.

reply

It wasn't horrifying. It was poorly shot and edited. So was the rest of the movie in comparison to it's predecessor. It came off less like a mainstream horror and more like a direct to video troma or full moon flick. It's disappointing because the first one was surprisingly good.

reply

It's been awhile since I've seen it, but I can't argue with that. I remember thinking pretty much the same. And like you, I did enjoy the 2006 remake of the Wes Craven original. My comment was just on the idea of people complaining about something horrific in a horror movie, more specifically THIS type of horror movie.

reply

That's fair. Honestly, the genre got into the torture rut around this time and it seems like filmmakers just added more gore and violence thinking that was the key to making a good horror movie. Now it's jumpscares and white faced monsters with heavy black eye makeup.
