Stupid way to move the plot along

I like this movie a lot, but. (spoiler)

Him telling Mila's character all that happened with Sarah was completely ridiculous and only so she would be mad at him.

He should have slept with her and got caught or something.

I disagree. Peter confessing to Rachel showed how much he truly cared about her. He wanted to be up front and honest.

Besides, that was a turning point for Peter. It showed that he had moved on from Sarah mentally and no longer wanted to be physical with her. He finally came to his senses that he was just not meant to be with her. Then he thought about Rachel and left.

If he did sleep with Sarah, then it would mean that he never truly moved on from her and wouldn't be able to move on with someone new. Then there wouldn't be a point of the movie. He wouldn't truly "forget" her if that scene didn't happen.

I disagree. Telling all to Rachel was unnecessary. You don't have to be that honest. What purpose did it serve. Unless Rachel asked a direct question, he oughta just kept that to himself. He didn't sleep with Sarah. Nuff said. No need to spill out his guts to Rachel. What did he want by "confessing"? A medal? It was very self serving and selfish. Or at the very least short sighted or immature.

So let me paint you a picture. You're dating someone. It's clear that you both have strong feelings for each other. You had sex, really care about this person, and see something forming with this person. However, he/she fooled around with their ex (after you started dating/had sex with this person/feelings were formed, etc) and never told you. You wouldn't be upset if they never told you anything? Even if this wasn't a deal breaker for you, you wouldn't be a little bit upset about the fact that they never let you know anything, just as a sign of respect? He/she had the mentality of: "It's between me and my ex, not you. It's none of your business. We didn't have sex. Nuff said"

You wouldn't feel a little hurt by that? After what you both have been through? Sure, they didn't have sex, but they still messed around which was going to lead up to sex. If not, then you must not have any feelings whatsoever.

He didn't sleep with Sarah. Nuff said. No need to spill out his guts to Rachel.

Just because they didn't sleep together, doesn't mean he shouldn't have been honest with her about what happened. They still fooled around. Just because there was no sex, doesn't make it plausible. He still kissed her and it was leading up to sex. She went down on him for god sake.

It was clear that a relationship was forming between him and Rachel. It may not have been completely official at that point, but it was still there. Why would it be okay for Peter to go fool around with Sarah, and then go back to Rachel as if nothing happened? She deserved to know the truth. That's not fair for Rachel to get into a relationship with Peter if he was still fooling around with other women (especially his ex). It wasn't as if Rachel and Peter only went on 1 date and hardly knew each other. They spent a lot of time together and grew to really like each other and Peter had respect for her.

Whatever happened with Peter and Sarah BEFORE Rachel came along is obviously none of her business. However, Rachel was involved with Peter when he fooled around with Sarah. Therefore, it is her business to know what happened between them. Rachel and Peter weren't madly in love, but it looked like she was deeply hurt after finding out he did that.

Peter didn't want a medal but like I said earlier, it was done with respect. He knew it was the right thing to do. He didn't want to lie to her because he cared about her. He knew that fooling around with Sarah would've made her upset and it did, but he still wanted her to know the truth.

How is it selfish that he told her about what happened between him and Sarah? He didn't tell her to brag about it. He told her because he cared about her and how it would make her feel. He wasn't trying to hurt her, but he wanted to tell her so he could still show her that he was honest. It's better to hurt with the truth than not say anything at all.

The selfish thing to do would've been to not say anything at all to Rachel for your own benefit.

No, he and Rachel were in the very beginning stages of romance -- no commitment or anything like that. He had the opportunity with Sarah, and he didn't take it. There was no reason for him to divulge that to Rachel. Him doing anything with Sarah wasn't cheating on Rachel. Now, if he and Rachel were exclusive, and it was cheating (despite the fact that he didn't actually go through with sex), it's more complicated. Although, in my opinion, if he truly was sorry and knew that would never happen again, I wouldn't advise him to tell her.
