My mother-in-law is a stand in for....

Jane Alexander for the movie. I didnt know who Mrs. Alexander was before today. When I saw her picture I thought my mother-in-law was her. I have a question what does a "stand in " do? I am not an actor,or a film buff so I dont have a clue what everyones jobs are.

A stand is someone who pretends to be the actor while the gaffer (lighting technician) and camera operators do their thing so the real actor doesn't have to sit there forever. Basically a double off camera.
