Pure Garbage

HAHAH! Such B.S.

"It's O.K. I'm a doctor." *two fist pounds* "O.K. we have a pulse." This movie should be burned just for that.

I don't know where she got her doctrine but I fear for her patients. I took her for a nurse when I saw her doing her own bandaging in a dark ER. I'll let that one slide considering it might have been a smaller town/smaller hospital.

Psychics are professional liars! And why does the supposed "death" card come up in every god forsaken film with a god forsaken tarot reading. One movie cliche I wish they would never ever use again.

All frustration aside....

I could have done without this film. Their relationships seemed too false. Too forced. Then Morgan Freeman as the all-seeing, all-knowing, wise, Socratic narrator. Spying on the neighbors all the time. Always hanging out at the coffee shop. Came off somewhat annoying. What was the point of this film?! I learned to never get married.

reply

Totally right about the 'Death' card cliche. Obviously, the screenwriter has never had a tarot reading & has probably seen it done in some other bad movie.

But it fit in with all the other terrible cliches in this movie. Most annoying is that they tried to market it as a comedy. Greg Kinnear's pathetic bartering with his newphew to get back his dog was sad, not funny. His character was just a slight variation from "Little Miss Sunshine". Only, that movie had genuine comedy, originality, and soul.

reply

Agreed.
I usually advise people to spend $3 to rent a mediocre movie on DVD rather than do like I did and waste $10 in a theatre, but in this case, save your $3... This movie is just bad. I hope Morgan Freeman chooses better scripts for his future projects. He and Jane Alexander deserve better, and so do their fans.

reply

A movie that started off bad. But as it went on it got steadily worse. Boring people doing boring things. It was like watching the most insufferable people's personal lives and wanting to run away from them. Or at least switch off.
Absolutely dreadful.

reply

Well. It's too bad you have to come out here and use a provacative title in your subject "Pure Garbage."

One thing i've learned over the years is to beware of people who generalize too much because they aren't grounded in reality.

For me this movie has value (i.e. not "pure garbage") and I think the scene that really did it for me was Morgan Freeman's character telling Greg's character
"Everything we need to know is going on right in front of our eyes. Yeah we have our illusions about people our hopes and they can blind us But the end is always right there in the beginning."

And although I think the film had some problems, it wasn't so bad that this message wasn't well received at that moment and I think that's worth allot. I'd take a modest film like this over a thousand "Aliens V Predator" or "300's" or "Cloverfields" etc.

I would recommend this film to anyone who has enjoyed movies like "Love Actually" and "Happiness" or "Little Children" if only because there are so few films like this being made every year.

Pure garbage? I would urge you (selfishly on my part) to try and engage the intelligent crowd by being a little bit more thoughtful and careful with your words so as not to come across as a troll. You never know, someone with something real to say might respond. And who cares about the rest?

reply

Thanks. I thought the subject was fitting. I thought the movie was pure garbage three months ago when I originaly posted this and I still think this movie is pure garbage.

Are you assuming I'm not grounded in reality? When one of my core complaints on the movie was that it was not realistic enough? But please explain yourself. How did I generalize?

Happiness the Todd Solondz film?! How does that compare to this movie? Besides being a drama. I'm a fan of all three films (Love Actually, Happiness, Little Children) but I would have been upset if you had recomended me this film.

Perhaps intellegint people who have issues with a random opinion posts should keep on keeping on. I guarentee there are far more pressing matters to keep yourself occupied with. And I urge YOU to be a little less fervent when it comes to people and their opinions over the internet.

reply

Do you know what's funny? You posting your opinion over the internet is what got us all here in the first place.
I loved the film and yes, recommended it to friends.

reply

Funny how people (critics especially) can be extremely forgiving of total recycled fluff like, say, "Just Like Heaven" but then totally jump all over a movie like this that's even slightly more substantial in spite of its obvious flaws. There's got to be a happy medium somewhere between extreme naivete and extreme cynicism...which is roughly where this movie falls, IMO.

reply

i 100% agree with the OP
and i didnt like little children
this movie was pointless and the CPR scene(well, what i thought was SUPPOSED to be CPR) was the worst in the entire film
i saw this movie as boring and pointless
i dont believe there was any kind of "feast" of love going on
it was all crappy love
andddd it was so unrealistic how the day oscar and wachacallit met they were soooooooooooooo in love

this movie reminded me of the last kiss in that it wasnt terrible, but a totally pointless waste of time and money.

reply

andddd it was so unrealistic how the day oscar and wachacallit met they were soooooooooooooo in love

that reallly bugged me. oscar said something along the lines of "i'll protect you from anything", and i was thinking "hm...for only meeting her 5 hours ago, that's a tad dramatic".

reply

i do like this movie, and i defineltely teared up, okay so i actually cried a little, at the scene where oscar and chloe were sitting in bed talking about the future.

i only watched this because i am a obsessive fan of toby hemingway, and i think he did a really good job. i think if anyone watches this movie, they'll underrate him cause hes a no one actor and his relationsip is "non realisitc" but if you look at it from the standpoint that they are too peple that have such a sense of passion and hurt in their own homes, that they gravitate towards each other, and then their relationship is explosive. i think its a classic tale of young love. i was REALLY upset when oscar died at the end, i thiought her love would save him in the end, but i understand why they had to kill him. their relationship was too perfect. they had their eyes open and they fell in love, but at the same time, oscar was blind about his future, while chloe was all seeing.

all in all, i cried threee times during this movie, the future scene, the scene with morgan freeman and jane by the mirror, and the end. the whole end, from him dying till the end.

i thought it was a good movie, and i'm going to buy it on dvd to support toby, but im not saying it was the greatest movie i've ever seen, because it wasnt.
the quotes were amazing though. it was a quality movie, and i feel that it hasnt earned enough recognition as it deserves.

I have to agree with the nay-sayers on this one. What I minded was the fake heart-warming wisdom dished out by director Benton and actor Freeman. Too cheap for words. By the way 'pure garbage' is a wonderful oxymoron, more inspired than anything in the movie. After this, I need a helping of dirty farmer's market unhusked vegetables. Above all, I don't need my heart warmed. The last I checked it was 98.6 degrees Fahrenheit.

It's not that moviemakers shouldn't try for complex love relationships realistically rendered. But here they are phoning in their shallow performances. Others have already pointed out the cheapest shots - the whole tarot thing (and not just the death card), the doctor's bandaging and chest thumps, the various infidelities palmed off as profound. The cuteness, the faux sincerity, the bad acting (especially Freeman), all offend my sensibilities.

And where is the town in Oregon that is so folksy, so tolerant, so twee, so Hallmark homey? That's a town I want to be sure to avoid as I head 'Into the Wild.'

I loved this movie so much that I thought about it for most of the day and recommended it to friends. To give you a point of reference...I love Gone with the Wind, Legends of the Fall and Fallen. Those are the three that came off the top of my head.

reply

I´m with you!i just saw the movie and it was the worst movie i've seen in theatres!
it was so bad so bad! in portugal we only have to pay 5 euros, but still, what waste of my money!
i laught in almost all the scenes because they were so ridiculous, even in the death scene!!! bah!!

reply

Right on. I want my $3.25 and those two hours of my life back! Pure camp. Greg Kinnier was good as per usual (so was Radha Mitchell!), but the script was the pits. For shame.

reply

Did anybody else get irritated by all the nudity? I thought it was a bit much.

reply

oh gah yea
as a matter of fact thats all i kept thinking the entire time
was why every time i turned around there were naked people

reply

YES! What was all of the nudity and sex about? I'm not a prude but that was way over the top. I didn't like the movie ... but I think I would have liked it more had it not been so sexually explicit.

Good heavens. People.

reply

And soooo much sex! We get it-- sex happens when you're in lust.

I agree. It was simply horrid. Do they seriously expect us to believe that the guy was in love with three women and met 2 of them... in the course of ONE YEAR. I mean...most people aren't that lucky ever, and I don't know what was so great about him that attracted the women in the first place. I expected more out of Morgan Freeman. Though the punch at the end was pretty entertaining. Thats about it though.

i was disappointed with this too. just watching the progression and the subject matter, you just KNOW the book must have explored the nature of love far more deeply.
Unfortunately NONE of that is shown here...it was average and simple. The only interesting and engaging relationship was that of the the blonde and the cheating husband. They were actually in love, and despite being cheaters...they followed their heart.
As for the Kenear character, first i felt sorry for him, then i wanted to slap him for being such an idiot, and in the end i was simply done with him. i didn't really care about the rest(although i wanted to).

quite a mediocre film from a great topic, good director and talented actors.
