To answer your first question, the little boy was excellent and didn't irritate me at all, he was very endearing. Normally, like you, I can't stand little kids trying to act, but this was an exception. I suppose the director didn't tell him what to do too much, just let the boy be himself.
As I have never seen California Dreaming I can't answer your second question. To me, The Way I spent the End of the World was a good film, but it could have been better, there were too much loose ends. And yes, the film is fairly light, there is some drama involved obviously but emotions rarely run high. The level of (shown) violence is minimal.
