Curiosity-mongers, subscribe here (by Cristian Vararu)

I was an actor in this film and have tried for a while to make a connection between my IMDb account and the matching profile, so that I may answer to any (solid-stated!) curiosity some of you may have regarding the film. Although it's been almost an year since its release, some of you may still be looking for some answers, so feel free to ask.

At first I want to say that i really loved the movie. But as a Non-Romanian (I'm from The Netherlands) a few things where hard to understand. But it's a while ago since i've seen it.

But could you maybe just tell something about making the film.

...And here's to you, Insomniac, in an end, but I really can't figure out what could I ever write about here as a general statement or so. Rather, if you are interested in something a little more precise (like asking me to say something about some certain scene or fact in the whole film, how did I get along with some person in the crew etc.), that'd be a great help.
It's been two weeks or more since you posted your question and I can't find such a broad answer to such a broad question.
That's why I'm now waiting.

I saw the extra scene with the suicide of that boy who was Lalalilu's friend and I was wondering if there were other scenes that would connect or better explain this one.I think it was shocking to see a child's suicide and I'm also wondering why it was dropped.

reply

Now that's a question! The name for the suiciding friend of Lalalilu is Silvica, the one wearing glasses and the shyest of the three friends.
Should I mention that I've composed music for that scene, as it seemed to me some key scene in the film (as it was designated in the original script)? They firstly rejected my music, and then the scene itself. Interested to hear the music?
Silvica has no intention of suicide in the first place. In the original script, this scene followed right after the Securitate arrests "Uncle" Titi early in the morning. There were cops all over the place and Silvica would run to the train tracks when he saw a train coming from a distance. Further, it is all about the script's policy of ambiguities whether Silvica wanted to distract the cops (hard to believe) or just to have his kinda protest by mimicing suicide.
The train passing above the tracks can't harm a person in real life, except for besmearing them with any substances, oils, vaseline or even feces.
The scene was dropped because:
1. many could think just as you did, that the kid intended to suicide. Think for yourself, only the film as we know it (the final cut) features two suicide scenes from Lalalilu (which is already too much). Another would've been that of himself jumping from the top of the house, which was not even that hilarious (now dropped) and the fourth candidate, the scene that we're speaking of here now (also dropped). What's with all these suiciding kids, all in all?
2. the trucage is quite cheap (Silvica appears and dissapears from between the tracks in a very obvious manner) and putting a child under a train could've been thought of as crime (although a still child would've passed the test in one piece) and fright could determine the actor to act against his will. Other tricks would've been off the directing policy of the film, which avoided special FX as much as possible.
Some, that's about it. I hope this made it clear for you. See you around.

Where was the ship she was working on in the end located?
Why didn't she go there originally [why did she turn back after starting to cross the river]? Thanks

You were Andrei? Beautifully acted, my friend. Your English is impeccable, too.
However, I was wondering about the death of Alex. Was it the intention of the filmmakers to keep it ambiguous? Did he die in the revolution?

reply

Thanks for opening this discussion . Like DNA IS SEXY I have the same question : How Alex died ? My wife got the same idea (Alex died in the revolution) , female intuition ? Why she returned from crossing Danube ? She seemed to have a stronger character than her neighbor . She was more ,,headstrong''. Why she accepts to make love to Alex ?

reply

That's exactly the point that astonished me too.Why and how did Alex die?

Blessed are the forgetful, for they get the better even of their blunders.

reply

Given that, at the very end of the movie, the kids have just been to visit the Heroes Cemetry, and that they have left flowers for Alex there, it is surely implied that he died a hero's death, persumably in the fighting against Ceausescu's security police?
