Many of these guys know how to play the guitar, and in some cases are actually musicians, like "Bjorn Turoque" (Dan Crane), who is in a band called "Nous Non Plus." And his band performed the title song "Air Guitar Nation" for the documentary, which he wrote himself.
In general, the guys who take air guitar very seriously and avoid hamming it up too much are the ones who also actually know how to play the guitar for real.
As an entrant in the UK Championship (aka The Hooded Fingerer) I took it seriously enough to want to put on a good show for the crowd but nothing more than that.

As usual, someone who entirely misses the point. Did you not watch? Airguitar is an art form. A "real" gutar is the same, every time you see it, pick it up and is an object,already created it can be stolen, etc. The airguitar is played however the artist feels it should be played at that moment in time, different than yesterday or last year etc and is that persons for life, noone can take c-diddy's championship airguitar. Next time, take your ADD meds and try to pay attention.

As someone who does play guitar, I loved it. Loved it! These people truly love the music and foster that feeling of freedom and fun that rock music was born of. I was a little confused at first but by the time the movie was over I was grinning from ear to ear.
Mr. original poster, you need to lighten up and try to enjoy yourself sometime, for there is no room for a party pooper in air guitar.
