Is it so restrictive to go to Catholic school in the UK?

As a person who grew up in the Catholic school system, I was surprised to see the lengths Lucy's parents went through to get her into a Catholic school. Here in the US you don't necessarily have to be Catholic to attend. Among my classmates were Muslim, Buddists, Protestants. They weren't required to attend the religious classes or the masses, but the alternative was study hall (which was held in strict silence). Most attended the religious classes and masses to not have to go through solitary confinement.

Is it so difficult to get children into Catholic schools in the UK? Is it because there aren't many there?

I'm not sure on the reasoning but when I was over in the UK people were talking about how it was hard to get into those schools. I think the theory was that there was a bit of a shift against public schools and people are opting for "better" schools - better meaning wealthier, more discipline, better teaching and that seems to coincide with religious schools. Now I'm not sure if they're over-subscribed or just trying to continue their religion because of all the heathens going in, but they will now only accept Catholics, or maybe they get offered places first. (Not sure how that's allowed, but anyway.) Some of my relatives are already going to church with their 3-year-old, making sure he's down on Sunday School lists etc., so they can get him into the local Catholic school, because they investigated and that's the only way to get in, so it happens. But here in Australia they don't check your religion either, as far as I know, although they request you're kind towards the faith. But you still have to attend their religion classes.

I only saw a snippet of this, I tried to video it but unfortunately never got to see it. I hope it comes to Australia.

it's not just about being catholic, it's a kind of points system, you need to do a variety of things to get in.

We are the all singing, all dancing, crap of the world!

Religious schools have a points system in the UK. The points favour the denomination of the school but kids from other religions can certainly get in. It can also depend a lot ion the catchment area as well.

Its that man again!!
