They were using revolvers mostly weren't they ?
Which means either .44 mags .38s or .38 specials or .357 revolvers. No way in hell is that lead not penetrating the skull and deflecting out. Also in terms of going straight the back of the skull and through the eye socket - exit wounds are more common in fleshy parts (stomach chest neck ) . The back skull would slow the bullet down drastically and then penetrating brain tissue and would slow down and lose too much power to go through the front of the head and into the crowd. If they were from a further distance maybe - which would allow the round to reach top speed and have highest power - at point blank range the round has no where to go but forward
