Sit there so calmly with so many bullets slamming into his torso at that range? I should imagine just one bullet would severely screw him up and cause pain and shock to register, so half a revolver in him would have been more dramatic still.

Why not one bullet into his head? Less noise, quicker death, less blood, quicker getaway.

That would've been the irony of the story as he survived the game. I think that's what the writer wanted to avoid and leave the option to think that he could've survived.
