die of exactly? They don't say in the movie. He was only 53 or so. I know Vernell said something to Dewey towards the end like "All those years of hard livin' will catch up to ya" so I assumed it was something alcoholism related.

But does anyone know? Thanks!

Just a shot in the dark - when the two rejoiced at the pool joint,
at some point Petey started coughing pretty bad, pretty deep...
Maybe tuberculosis?
