Spock is WAY too emotional

This is one the main points against this movie I've seen and having now just watched it, I have to agree. Quinto does a terrible spock. In fact I found it difficult watching any of the actors play the original characters. I would have preferred it if they had made a new Star Trek with new characters because the inevitable comparisons drag this movie down.

If you know your trek, Vulcans DO have emotions, much stronger than humans in fact. they realised it was leading them down a dangerous path with weapons like Psionic Resonators. That was the time the 'Logic religion' took off. They are taught from a very young age to suppress their emotions. You can argue Quinto played it too 'human', but he's supposed to be half-human and the other Vulcans expect him to have less emotion discipline. I think Quinto put in a good performance.

If you need to know why, remember this film was supposed to 'appeal to a wider audience'. it was NOT made for Trek fans.

But he's even more emotional than many human societies like the Japanese. He was raised in a reserved society that values emotional restraint yet has little. He even talks and shows too much pda with Uhura.

Because Quinto's Spock is half-human and obviously never learned to suppress his emotions like Nimoy's Spock did.

Nimoy's Spock is also half-human.

And Nimoy's Spock could also be emotional including in Star Trek 2009, Star Trek IV, and Star Trek VI.

Anyway, Nimoy played a Vulcan better than anyone in the Star Trek franchise.
But that does not mean that only he can play the role.

it is just in my opinion - imo - 🌈

Nimoy's Spock was always half human and he too had problems controlling his emotions. But not as much of a problem Quinto's Spock has apparently.

I wouldn't say I'm a die hard fan but yes, I agree, I always though Vulcans kept emotions under control.

I agree. Also I find Spock's lisp annoying.

Maybe too emotional....but we are seeing a much younger Spock. Perhaps he got better at suppressing his emotions as he matured. How old is Spock supposed to be in this movie? Mid-20s maybe? In the original series I thought Spock was in his mid-30s.

reply

Not only that, but in TOS, Spock's mother was still alive. His human half reacted to the sudden loss of his mother.

In my opinion Quinto pulls off a great Spock. I can see that just basing it off this one movie though, he comes off too emotional. The big difference (to me) is that Nemoy's Spock was a regular through the entire run of Star Trek (original tv series) and movies so he had much more time to convey the typical Vulcan's control over emotion. If you removed all you knew of Nemoy's Spock and watched him in Wrath of Khan only, I'd say the emotion is on Par between the two actors.

Quinto seems like a romulan

Zachary is an awesome Spock and I like seeing he can go human when pushed too far; but it should be an occasional thing. Not something done every movie.
