So Kirk Becomes Captain Because....

Pike thinks greatness is genetic.

Your dad (who I didn't know and who didn't achieve anything of significance in his career) did something heroic in his last moments when he sacrificed himself to save some people so... um... based purely on that, I'm gonna assume that you're brilliant and should join Starfleet.

I'm also gonna go to bat for you on numerous occasions for um... the same reason.

Basically, I'm gonna go out of my way to help you. Yup... just gonna.

You're like... totally awesome.

Okay cinemasins, that's enough imdb for you

What were you smoking while watching this movie?

How do you know he never met him? They had to be about the same age.

His dad was also 1st Officer of the ship, so he did achieve something.

Also, you missed the part where Pike asked Kirk if he liked being a genius level repeat offender. As in, he knew there was more to Kirk than just him screwing around.

I was smoking... paying attention cigars, ya idiot.

Pike makes it clear in the movie that his obsession with George Kirk came through writing his dissertation (not through contact). He has become so enamoured with George's no-win scenario heroics that he dribbles his love juice all down young Jim's shirt.

That's the point, dumbass. That very piece of dialogue demonstrates Pike's hard-on for the Kirk family. He knows about George's exploits through his dissertation research then creepily stalks his son presumably because he believes greatness is somehow hereditary.

How else do you explain his unnecessary insights and fixastion on George's son?

It is explained by you being an idiot and projecting how you stalk young men.

Yup.

Pike had a heterosexual man crush on Kirk.

I know a young guy who got far because a manager had an...interest... in him. But, unlike Kirk, this young guy had to put out.

Not exactly (and guessing those in this thread already address this).

Pike saw his aptitude tests, takes an impression from the ambitious/go-get-em attitude from the bar fight, and having done research in regards to Kirk's father and presumably in the process developing a sort of hero-admiration from that... thinks Kirk has the POTENTIAL to be a great Captain.. and also feels Kirk should join Starfleet since there is probably some element of feeling bad/pity for Kirk from having lost/not known his father etc.

Kirk apparently does finish the Academy in three years instead of four (although that is questionable based on the fact that everyone else he was on the shuttle with apparently graduated in three years too.. so not that impressive :) ) and clearly has that out-of-the-box initiative that Pike felt Starfleet was missing.. so of course Pike is going to go to bat for him as this is a person and trait he feels is needed in Starfleet.

And since it was Kirk's instincts and character trait of not giving up and doing the unorthodox approach that saved Earth...Pike ended up being right. This doesn't mean greatness being genetic is accurate...but it does say Pike had a good eye for talent/instinct.
