How did they contain that red matter?

That mysterious "red matter" goo the Vulcans created? If one spot of it could create a blackhole how could they even control it at all? Wouldn't it form a blackhole right in the laboratory?

And how did they know that a blackhole created would allow time travel (of all things)? Why wouldn't they think it would simply crush any space ship foolish enough to enter the blackhole (like it did with the planet Vulcan)?

Who said they knew it would allow time travel? 

Red Matter is just an unexplainable "McGuffin" in the Star Trek Sci-Fi world.....what I want to know is why does the engineering section on the Enterprise look like the engineering on the TITANIC or something?? Boilers and steam with gauges and junk, in the 22nd century?

reply

Red Matter is Superdense white dwarf particles held in magnetoferrofluid within a magnetic bottle, the Enterprise looks that way because in that timeline engineering practices fell into steampunk aesthetics...it's all in the Art of STAR TREK The Movie book.

Wake up, Time to DIE.

Lukekywalkrawakenz, THANK YOU! I had forgotten about any practical licensed application for the aesthetics of steampunk probable in the Trek Universe.

All I know is that Red Matter is never brought up in any Prime Universe works (ENT/TOS/TNG/DS9/VOY/PIC) before or after the events of 2387. It's unrealistic and stupid when it comes down to it.

Voyager's somewhat similar 'Omega Particle' is how it is done right, with explanation and backstory. Red Matter has no such thing.
