Is he a ghost? Did he die in Afghanistan or was he only wounded? Was it all in his mind? Can someone explain what the movie was about?

Ok we figured it out. He did die in Afganistan. We dont know this for certain until his flashback sequence near the end. In the flashback we see the terrorist un-cork a grenade, the following shots are of him giving up his dog tags and the Saint Maria Pendant. The whole movie is his dying wish to go home and set things right to himself.

ya, thats what i realized at the end as well.
of course its kind of a weird wish to have ones eyes cut out.

Tiny comment in the beginning when he asked his Gunnery Sargent if it was bad to pray for revenge, his Gunny replies, "The Taliban are praying for revenge all of the time. Some of them even believe they can come back from the dead and kill you."
