Did anyone besides me love this movie?

I really loved it. And in the end I wanted Michael and Shirley together. But that's just me.

I thought it was good. Basically you have to look at it like a surreal, middle-aged male fantasy. If you look at it like that, I think you can enjoy it.

I watched it with two middle-aged women and *whew* that was wrong. They were *pissed*, very pissed. I think older women were disgusted to think that men would like young, teen-aged girls. I think that was the major objection to the movie.

I think it would be really easy, as a middle-aged guy (that I am) to be offended as well. Like we're all a bunch of dogs that would start banging our babysitters! I'm sure many fantasize, but very, very few of us would ever do that, and we DAMN sure wouldn't be paying for it, turning high school girls into prostitutes. We have daughters, after all.

This movie isn't about reality though, it's about a quirky, surreal dream/nightmare/fantasy. If you look at it that way, it was fun.

Why is it that movies have to have some big message? Why does a movie have to make some big statement? Why can't it just be a slice of life? A slice of fantasy? Total nonsense? Seriously, what is it with people now days with movies? Obsessively contemplating messages, symbolism and lofty meanings? It's like the people that go on for hours about Donnie Darko. I mean, I loved that film, but give it a REST. It's make-believe, folks. Fiction. Pretend. Watch and enjoy it and quit demanding some great meaning from it all. It's Hollywood, what are people doing looking for great meaning from Hollywood anyway. That's like going to confession to a prostitute.

Bladerunner, that is probably one of the best posts I've seen on IMDB in a while. Mostly because I agree with you completely :)

Why... thank you. I appreciate the support! ;-)

I would like to add to Bladerunners post that also, young girls around the same age also seemed to enjoy this movie. I was the same age as the girls in the movie when this came out although I watched it for the first time when I was 18 but I absolutely loved it. Most people either expect to see a almost porn or some really girly movie with a lot of drama. If that's what youre expecting to see then I can understand why you would think it was boring.

I think young women would enjoy the movie because they might enjoy the power reversal going on. I think most young women would agree with me that it is an intoxicating thing when a girl becoming a woman realizes the power she possesses. You see some girls abuse this power, by flirting with older men, trying to drive them wild, getting off on this new power they possess. The movie gives you loads of this kind of power reversal.

I think it has the same appeal - in a manner of speaking - that the Three Ninja movies have. Kids love to see movies where kids "beat" the adults. Kids constantly have to do what they are told, wash behind their ears, brush their teeth, clean up their room. They can't do whatever they want, they can't eat all the candy they want, and they feel sometimes a bit oppressed. When they see movies like The Three Ninjas, or Big Fat Liar, or other movies where kids create a power reversal, dominating the adults, it is cathartic for them. The same is true here. Young girls that are usually told what to do, clean your room, no texting after ten o'clock, quit talking on the cell so much, no you cannot wear that to school, and so on... they enjoy the power reversal in this film.

Here the girls are totally in charge. They have the men at their mercy. They are worshiped for their beauty, totally desired, so much so that the men pay enormous sums for their pleasures. They are worshiping the girls with their desire and their money. The men are simply objects to be manipulated to their will. It is a fantasy for both older men and younger girls. Both get to live out certain elements of their fantasy life, without participating in the vile activities onscreen.

Back in the 70s, there used to be a whole sub-genre of exploitation films about hot and nubile babysitters, hitch-hikers, students, whatevers that no-one used to get up in arms and throw hissy-fits about.

But now in the days of PC-ness, everything has to be demonized and vilified as something degenerate and evil; these do-gooders would probably support bans on those older movies if they got the chance.

So here we have a newer film about that same kind of subject, only it actually takes itself seriously and presents the story as more "real world" than any sort of exploitative approach...and the do-gooders still hate it. Can't win for losing.

"If you look at it that way, it was fun. "

So...under-aged girls (or any woman, really) degrading themselves by being paid for sex is "fun" to you? Ok. Did you notice WHY she went into this "business"? To pay for college? I think this movie was a pretty sad commentary on what some women feel they must go through to "make it" in the world.
In what warped world is this a "fantasy"? Who has fantasies about degrading women? People can go on and on about how this is about female empowerment, but that doesn't make it true. Why should a woman have to sell her body to gain some power? There is nothing powerful about being used.

I really liked this movie but for other reasons and it just might be that I'm older.

It's not that the girls found a business or that there just might have been some real interest between Michael and Shirley.

What I really liked about the movie is that it ended up the way it was supposed to be all along.

Too often marriage lends itself to tedium and it might not take too much to lead someone astray.

I'm not preaching here and I did feel some pang for those two but marriage is what it is and it is an emotional contract between two people. If the tedium gets to be too much, well, then it's time to talk to the partner.

As far as a movie goes, I thought it was very, very good.

I rented The Babysitters from Blockbuster Video and I loved The Babysitters and I wanted Michael and Shirley to be together too. I have The Babysitters on Blu-ray and DVD with John Leguizamo.

No, I thought it was terrible but I will confess I didn't finish it either. It was in my Netflix queue forever as a "long wait" so I thought it must be a good movie if everyone wanted it. It was boring and after the first 30 minutes I started watching it on fast-forward stopping a few times but it didn't seem to get any better. I may give it another try if/when it comes on HBO or Showtime.

reply

FYI, it is on Showtime now, if you have thought to give it another try.

It would`ve been sooo much better/more believable if they were college students. That way they wouldnt be having sex with teenage girls and the way the teenagers were behaving would`ve been much more believable too.

reply

dude teenage girls do act like that lol.. specially now-a-days.

once the initial shock of it all wore off, i was like ...eh. i liked that the girls were entrepreneurial. thought the concept was disgusting nonetheless. overall the movie is forgettable compared to other teen shock fests/coming-of-age movies

i started watching it and could not finish it. i was too disturbed by the concept. like someone said, if they were college girls, i would've been ok with it.
