I saw it as the Germans being some distance away in a (quite possibly noisy) armoured car. The uncle was trying to convince him the shot would be heard, but he decided to take the chance that it wouldn't be.

I thought that maybe after the shot, he took off running and hid among the trees and the Nazis never found him.
