Cognitive-behavioral Therapist

I enjoyed the movie, mostly because I could relate to it, but I felt it was weakened by the removal of Mary Steenburgen's character after 20 minutes or so. Cognitive-behavioral therapy and working with your thoughts and emotions is one of the few avenues of treatment that shows real promise in helping people lift the burden of depersonalization and the anxiety associated with it. Meditation specifically has worked wonders for me in dealing with DP and weakening its grip to the point where I can see a future without it.

Meditation can be dangerous for people with mental problems, it can worsen things so it has to be done with caution, it simply isn't for everyone although I've heard many say they benefit from it.

@thisissparta

I suppose it has a lot to do with just how dark the negativity is that comes with your illness. You really let your mind go when meditating. I could see it having adverse effects in someone who was, for instance, a paranoid schizophrenic. I'm sure there are many other cases where caution should be used. However, for the majority, it can be an extremely positive and beneficial exercise.

I like that storyline and the therapist a lot. They could've used that character more instead of going into a romcom cliche. Good to know you found ways of handling your state. Even though I don't know what your meditation sessions are like, which route you choose to go, but if you feel it's working, it does. :)

I don't believe there is any effective treatment for DP. If there is I'm certainly not aware of it. Smoking pot is extremely dangerous and not worth the risk. But who listens?
