Stage Play vs Movie

I have seen the stage play twice. I would much rather have seen a well done video version of one of the live performances then this movie. I so wanted to like it and although it was ok it fell far short of the stage production. They should have made the movie with an entire cast that could sing. They opted for celebs to fill the main roles. In my humble opinion that was a mistake.

I saw the movie before the stage play and I'm glad I did. I enjoy the movie immensely and seeing the stage show live was a totally different experience, still wonderful. I like the movie better simply because of who plays the roles and they took out a handful of boring musical songs. But that's just me.

Adapting a successful Broadway play for the silver screen is tricky. Either filmmakers cast phenomenal singers with little box office cred (i.e. Rent) and take the risk of it flopping, or they go the route of casting established actors who may draw an audience and thoroughly risk ruining the musical aspect. Unfortunately, it seems more and more Hollywood is opting for the latter.

it would have been nice if they had had actors who could sing in the movie. Also actors who weren't about 20 years too old for the parts they were playing. But maybe they couldn't find any.

My wife and I have seen the stage play three times and have viewed the film three times. While it is true that the singers in the play had more singing talent than the singers in the film, I enjoyed the play and film equally. Maybe that is because I can sing no better than the singers of the film, so I can relate with them and admire them for making an effort.
While the stage play had better singing, the beautiful location scenes made the film entertaining for us.

I preferred the stage production. The film was average and some bad casting choices. I just pray that Pierce Bronson and Colin Firth should never try singing again. Both are severely tone deaf. The scenery was breathtaking, the clear beautiful ocean.

Well I an tell you for sure that you have seen the stage musical twice more times then I have seen it, but how would you define a well done video version of a live stage show, which are almost where to have been released. The only 2 stage musicals that I know of that was recorded on stage are Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street, and Shrek the Musical. And with movies like this they tend to cast movie actors and actress then people that do theater. I mean would you have gone to seen this, if most of the cast members were theater actors or actresses that bare unknown in less you have seen them in something before? And that is what makes it challenging of cast movie actors or actresses that can sing, and while I am not 100% sure, I am pretty sure that they casted him without hearing him sing. And this is the first and I can only hope the only time he sings in a movie.
