Eveyone at Uni in America really that obsessed with sororities and frats

is it really like that in american movies where they are all desperate to get into a house?

aren't you really there to get your degree?

i'm sure after you leave Uni it won't make a difference what house you're in, seems really childish to do whatever it takes to get into a house

no, its not really like that at all. well, obviously in every school there are gonna be some people who just came to party but there are also many many people who came to learn and get a degree. And then there are those who study but also enjoy being in a sorority, they just don't make it their life. They just show this in a lot of movies because movies about people who effectively balance school and being in a sorority and learn lots while in college don't interest a whole lot of people.

It depends on the school. I went to a small, liberal arts college in PA, about 25 miles northwest of Philly, and there was nothing to do there. The Greeks provided the social activities, and 60% of the 1100 students were in a frat or sorority.

At larger schools, and schools in cities, where there's something to do, the Greeks aren't as important.

And unfortunately, everyone who's never been to college here sees "Animal House", and "Revenge of the Nerds", and thinks, "Hmm...that must be what American college life is like"

Actually, it depends on where you are here in the US. Some areas, ie the Northeastern US, and the Southwestern US focus on academics. I am from the Northeastern US, PA to be exact, and even though they had frats and all, they were not date rape houses or whore houses.

Down Southeast, it is a different story, at least in a couple states I know. I lived in the Southeast as well and it can get ridicules. While I was taking a year off from school, I unfortunately had the displeasure of working where the sororities were bitches and the frat guys were on some trip. I lived near one frat guy and mistakenly asked what their "formals" were like, and I was thinking like a prom or something. Then this skinny guy who screwed most of sorority row, told me that he would show me (as in take me, yuk) but the sorority girls would throw a bitch storm. Like I wanted to go in the first place and I hated most of the sorority girls, they were total bitches, little minds with big heads and I think their combined IQ was 98. They forced a couple of smart girls in to make up their GPA. In Troy, AL, the frats and sororities did not have a mind of their own, they had to have permission or do what someone told them. As a non conformist, I do not believe I would have fit in there.

I also need to mention that football was a big deal and in one university had to remove their head coach for handing out cars, money to one of the players, see "The Ramsey Tapes."

Basically, there was one down to earth sorority, but I did not end up going to that school, I went to one in the Southwest, and some of the sororities were quite weird, but in a different way. But regardless of sports, their main thing was academics. Married people could join and they respected that, it wasn't so bad their.

The way I feel is this; if you want to join a frat or sorority, it can be a good thing because they do help with some really good things. But, if you join so that you can be somebody, then that means that you can't make it in the university without it. That being said, I belong to a lot of national honor fraternities, though I wish they would call them something else.

Bubble-headed bitchy soroities are most certainly NOT limited to the Southeastern US.

Nor do they represent most US college students, no matter the region.
