Odd....

Anyone know about a formal list on a website or anything about this ?

All I've seen is what's on this site... I was hoping for something more "formal".

Speaking of getting "cultured", C4 is a British channel.

So what this list has to do with "'real' americans" (whatever that means) is beyond me.

This was a British list.

Not American.

I can understand the conceit of most of the movies listed (even for films on the list that I don't like)

but these?
2. The Apartment (1960)
5. Sexy Beast (2000)
22. Heavenly Creatures (1994)
26. Hero (2002)
46. This Sporting Life (1963)
49. Secrets & Lies (1996)

Thes veryaverage titles chosen over better, more well-known & interesting movies is just bizarre.

I had to watch "CITY OF GOD" for a class and I was blown away.

I love that it was put on this list, I definitely agree that everyone should be required to see it. What an incredible film.

reply

I'm surprised Trainspotting was only 25. It should be close to number 1! And Fight Club is 36!

this is strange as on the original program manhattan was in the list...but now it is been replaced by back to the future on the C4 website...

each director only has one film in the list too, which means why some films are missing...

reply

Back to the Future was not on the list so the website must have made a boo boo.

The list tries to cover the broadest possible range of genres, eras, directors and countries in the hope that each film offers something that the others on the list don't. Hence there is only one Scorsese film and one Copolla when arguably much of their work is better than some of the other choices.

reply

How is The Godfather not on this list?

reply

Princess Mononoke is on there but not Rashomon, Shichinin no Samurai, Tokyo Monogatari or Ugetsu? What's up with that?!

reply

Yes that is strange. Where is 'Kwaidan' or 'Samurai Rebellion' as well... too many are dying without having seen that!

Also the list only has one Bergman film on it.

And 'Terminator 2: Judgment Day (1991)'?????? What a mediocre choice.
