The synopsis sounds like The Unberable Lightness of being

well that

How so? I mean, sure, both are about two people falling in love against the backdrop of protests and social changes, but that's hardly a new idea. I know nothing about this movie and just happened to come across it, so don't take me for some fan boy trying to defend it. I just don't really see any major similarities between The Unbearable Lightness of Being and this film based on the IMDB synopsis. The characters are students, as opposed to middle-aged, the setting is completely different, they're separated for totally different reasons, and infidelity is never mentioned.

There certainly is infidelity in the film. Also, the structure of the film is certainly reminiscent of Kundera's novel. I can't remember ULoB that well but I would say that politics play a more integral role in the plot in ULoB than in Summer Palace.

I agree there is definitely some similarity between the story-lines of Summer Palace and Unbearable Lightness. A group of friends live their lives, political protests take place, some of the friends leave the country, some of them meet again at the end.
