I loved the film ... and keep wondering whether there was a suggestion of a relationship between Teppei and Tatsuo ... he seemed to have a key of Teppei's flat, and when Teppei's mother asked who he was, he mumbled, but didn't answer ... and i wondered whether Teppei's incredulity about the whole thing, was down to him being gay.
I guess it is a question of whether Suo wanted to suggest it ??
Overanalyzing.
Tatsuo was not holding the key when he opened the door. He simply tried to open it.
He was mumbling because he didn't know who the heck that old woman (who he probably didn't know) was doing in his best friend's room.
I just watched it very closely and I dont think assuming he may be gay or bisexual is overanalyzing. It crossed my mind several times, then low and behold I came here and someone else thought the same thing. It is stated that he had a girlfriend at one part, but broke up with her. So we can say that much at least. Anyway, to me Tatsuo seemed awfully close to Teppei. He cared so much and was so emotional about the situation. Not that regular friends wouldnt care, but C'mon watch it again and tell me its absolutely impossible that they may be gay lovers. They both seem embarassed of their relationship when Teppei's mother arrives. Notice the mother has a look on her face as to say she understands they are boyfriends. From there on out, Tatsuo and Teppei's mother are side by side the whole film. Teppei also uses his phone call to contact Tatsuo when he's in jail over anyone else. Certainly this isnt "red handed evidence" (thats a joke considering the movie's theme), but they leave the scenario open for the imagination to wander in that direction.
