Not a must see if you read the book

Hi, just saw the movie last weekend. If you've read the fabulous book, then I would not recommend the movie. In my opinion it doesn't do a good job of really digging into the characters, it doesn't explain their motives and their emotional background too well. It stays quite true to the book, but then it makes up a couple of "new" scenes that were just for comic relief, which I would have stayed away from. I was quite disappointed.

can't really agree..
I've also read the book (in french) and do recommand the film if you've read the book! the characters are portrayed in a way as they are described in the book (apart from the grandma, they were all fabulous!) and the dialogues and the story are also very close to the book! all in all it is a good adaptation of a novel!
and it is difficult to get as deep as in the book: how to put around 600 pages (of the book) into a film of about 90 minutes?! so the job was well done

Now I'm torn! The book was so lovely and when I heard Audrey Tatou was starring I was very excited! Since it probably won't come out in New Zealand ever I don't have much of a debate.

I read the book a year or so ago and actually I didn't really like it. But I loved the movie! Rarely is the movie better than the book but in this case, it is :-)

The book is called Hunting and Gathering, by Anna Gavaldas. It's easily available in New Zealand and England but I don't know how easy it is to find elsewhere. It's really good, there's so much left out of the film. It's a good representation of the story but the book is beautiful.

I bought the book online at thriftbooks.com. I think it's available in betterworldbooks.com too. I am in the middle of the book; so far it's pretty good :) (The movie was really nice too!)

I definitely agree with the OP. I loved the book and found the movie to be one of the most disappointing book-to-movie movies ever!

reply

What's the book about?

... oh mait, never mind.

reply

Because I liked the movie a lot and after I found out it was based on a book, I went in search for it and right now I'm reading it for the second time.
I agree with OP that the movie does not dig deep into the characters. That's why I like the book better, but I've seen worse adaptations of books into a movie.

And without the movie, I probably never would have read the book.

What if this is as good as it gets?
