Have just watched "Krakatoa - The Last Days"... and am now watching Krakatoa Revealed.
Wow. Powerful, thought-provoking, harrowing. Captivating writing, acting and filming, the horror of what those people went through was made startlingly clear.
I thought it was all fantastic - although I struggle to see how such horrific burns wold not kill them. Their skin was black and peeling and there were red patches of flesh. Burns get infected easily and yet in such unfortunate circumstances, that family survived.
I thought it was heart-wrenching. When the mother went out to fetch the lost dog, leaving her son and husband alone in the lighthouse. I thought that was particularly sad, because she never got to say goodbye.

As bad as their burns looked I don't think they were life threatening injuries, they must've been badly scarred on some areas of their bodies though.
They were a tough family that's for sure.

If you read the survivor diaries on the discovery channels web site you will find that their burns were much worse than what was depicted in the movie. Their skin was hanging/falling off. Their extremities were edematous. It is a miracle that they survived especially since they did not recieve medical attention for several days. They were able to get a small amount of food and water which probably saved them. http://dsc.discovery.com/convergence/krakatoa/diaries/johanna.html?clik=fanmain_leftnav
While watching it I couldn't figure out where I had seen Johanna before and then at the end, I saw Olivia Williams in the credits. No wonder I was so impressed with her acting! She wasn't the only one. Her husband, the captain, the woman in the lighthouse -- all brilliant.
This was absolutely, without a doubt, one of the most amazing programs I've ever watched on television. To be honest, I had no idea volcanoes were that devastating. I just thought that if you could outrun the lava you were fine. Man... deafening blasts, lightning, tsunamis, poisonous gas in the air! Damn, remind me not to move near one of those, active or not.
What amazes me is I think I learnt more about the volcano from this than anything I've found on the internet so far. You'd think if they could make such a good drama from the records, there must be at least one decent website around.
"If we go on like this, you're going to turn into an Alsatian again."
Well I have no idea about the indonesian and how accurate it is but considering all of the Dutch characters spoke the queens English I suppose I can let that one go.
