IS IT AS GOOD AS PEOPLE SAY IT IS !!!???

I know a lot of people that slag off films without even seeing them first!!! and it puts me right off seeing that film and it is likely to be a good film!!

So can i have some honest opinions from people who have seen this film so i can get a better idea of whether to see it or not?

reply

I thought it was awful personally. I wasn't expecting it to be good, but was dissapointed all the same. But then again, some people like it, suppose it depends on your tastes. It has got some ok reviews in papers that i've read, like 2/3 out of 5 (way too generous!). I think the Guardian sum it up quite well http://film.guardian.co.uk/News_Story/Critic_Review/Guardian_review/0,,2040286,00.html

reply

I enjoyed it quite a lot, its not as risque as it could have been, but it kind of works well because of that. Trouble is that at times it does seem to be lacking laughs, but there are some really funny moments in there as well. I'd recommend it, but its definatelly flawed at times.

I have to agree with simonparker1990 i was suprised to see no nudity considering it had been advertised as "a british american pie!" but still it stands up on its own. It doesn't pick up till the second half but the bit where one of the main characters is hiding in the bathroom of his house with another character and his parents start having sex is absolutly hilarious

reply

I really enjoyed it! I wasn't expecting it to brilliant and I was pleasantly surprised! It gave plenty of laughs and although it does have a few flaws plot wise, the all round humour makes up for it. Take it for what it is and enjoy!

reply

It's a genuinely funny movie. Its cheap and british but if you ask me has a far better sense of humour than even the massively popular Hot Fuzz, which seemed to be mostly tired cliches, violence and loud cut-scenes of cars and stuff to wake you up.
Its pretty obvious that mikethebutcher who's been posting here, trying to trash the movie, leaving unhelpful reviews like "it's utter sh*t", has some personal grievance with the moviemakers- probably got fired as an extra or something- because everyone I know who's seen the movie reckons its much funnier than they were expecting.
So I decided to change my profile name this week to tell mikethebutcher what I think of him! Mate, it's really obvious that you're posting on the comments and boards trying to make the movie look bad but you're wasting your time because there will be hoards of people's comments posts and votes over the next weeks that will expose you as a lone nut!

reply

Good one mate. You've really put me in my place.

Ok lets wait to see what scores other people give it. Seeing as the Guardian gave it 1/5 and Total Film gave it 2/5 i am obviously a 'lone nut'. Also seeing as 23 other people have also given it a score below 5/10 it must be great. I accept that calling it 'utter sh*t' isn't the most constructive criticism, but hey, that's what i think.

Everyone i saw it with thought this film was bad and if you care to read my thread, some people agree with me. This is a film review sight, hence everyone is entitled to their views. I haven't tried to rubbish anyone else's reviews, i've just expressed my opinion. Why don't you grow up and do the same?

Oh, and using your logic Peter Bradshaw from the Guardian must have also been an extra who was fired by the movie makers.

reply

Guys guys guys, enough of that! Let’s keep this friendly! These forums are to comment on the films, not criticise each other’s posts!

And let’s try and encourage constructive criticism – mikethebutcher I must say that comments such as "I hope the actors were embarrassed when they went to the premier [sic]" is a rather odd and slightly immature way to criticise a film, and on this comment alone I think I can see why mikesucksthebutcher would think you had a personal vendetta against the moviemakers.

It’s great that you both feel so passionately about the film (either in a negative or positive way) and you are entitled to your own opinions, but let’s not be spiteful. So mikesucksthebutcher, change your name back to whatever it was before, and mikethebutcher think before you post throw-away comments.

And Matt-896 - as to whether you go and see it, evidently it provokes quite a bit of passion amongst its audience, so it’s obviously got something! And it’s British! Let’s get behind Britcoms!

On a final note, it's fair to say that the film's had mixed reviews - Empire 3 stars / The Sun 4 stars / Telegraph 1 star. But it's worth mentioning that it's unlikely its target audience was ever high-brow/conservative telegraph readers...so it's hardly surprising.

reply

Haha, fair point. Yeah it definately has had mixed reviews, better go see it for yourself!

Well susie, he did do something wrong, he used terms that you're not allowed to use on IMDb. I see his review has been removed by IMDb, that'll be why. Worse, if you ask me, is writing the kind of review that doesn't help anyone and doesn't appear to be the product of actually seeing the film.
I also think it's suspicious that someone who has practically never reviewed anything here or posted on any IMDb message boards has suddenly gone all out to post bad comments and votes for I Want Candy, start threads about how bad I Want Candy is, post links to the one really bad review it's got. Sort of suggests he's got a grievance don't you think? Most people who don't review or post on IMDb see a film they don't like and just forget about it. This guys got militant! And (despite posting under a madeup name now myself) having been a part of IMDb since the start, it annoys me when people attack a movie on here for personal or more often business reasons, often making multiple profiles and trying to harm it.
That's not what IMDb is for, and this is why I posted, it's not about me not allowing someone to voice their opinion like susiemurphyuk suggests. Writing helpful reviews is what its about, people who try to use it to damage a film's reputation will bring the irritable Db keepers out of the woodwork ;)

I did use a few naughty words, i am a very bad boy. My review has been deleted as well, someone must have reported it...wonder who that was! You are so sad mate.

reply

it has some pretty quick humor...

if you can keep up ...you'll get a few laughs

not bad...not wonderful

reply

Wow! you really went to the trouble of changing your name to mikesucksthebutcher?

Weeeiiiiiird dude!

Anyway, I don't wish to ruffle feathers, but I'm annoyed I paid money for this as, I too, thought it was utter sh*te.

reply

Mikethebutcher reads The Guardian.... has everyone got that.

That means he is intelligent (mmmmm?)

Shame I missed his original review. In response to the original question, yes this film far exceeded expectations (7/10)

reply

Had the theaters in stitches where I went to see it. I give it 9/10, had it not been British perhaps a 8/10. what can I say? I'm patriotic.

anu one know what the five ways are?

It's the worst film i've seen in a long time IMO, i watched it tonight and we all ended up beating on the friend who chose it. I laughed about 3 times (honestly) throught the whole film, compared to the last comedy i saw (wild hogs) where i was laughing all the way through. Some of the scenes were just painful to watch it was so bad.

reply

You've not seen many films, then.

You can't compare it to wild hogs either, it's a completely different kind of movie. Though I did feel both films were driven by it's characters more than the plot (slightly less so with wild hogs).

reply

I thought it was a "bloody good larf". Wife and I laughed until we cried (especially at the bit that required wet wipes).

Gentle Brit comedy with edge on a very low budget. Let's not forget the kind of thing that Holywood puts out on the money this movie was made with: nothing.

reply

it was funny movie.

reply

I didn't like it. If you are going to make a comedy about a porn, you need more T and A than this had. There were a lot of gross out moments which could have done without.......but hardly any nudity?

reply

I saw the film on Friday and thought it was ok but not the best though. This is up to you on whether or not you want to watch it.
