Demon Days Live

Is Shaun Ryder brain damaged? At first, I thought Gorillaz was nice and hired a mentally challenged person to sing, before I realized who that was. I couldn't understand a word he said/sang in Demon Days Live. Was he trying to sound that way? Or has he participated in too many football riots? Too much booze/smack/coke/acid/whatever?
