dude idaho really isnt that bad

i live here and they make it seem really boring. And not all the towns are that small.

They actually filmed this in L.A. (or near L.A.) and I heard the town name they used was made up.

I agree. People need to open their minds a bit. I'm from Idaho and totally
agree.

Idaho is beautiful

reply

Idaho is beautiful, some parts, like Bonners Ferry, even more so. But I guess you Idaho people don't want people to be reminded that Idaho is the white supremist capitol of the USA.

I spend my money on dope, sex and cheap thrills.
The rest of it, I waste.

The whole white supremacist capitol thing is a stereotype. There was a compound in northern Idaho, but they are long gone. You will find many more in other states.

Its pretty bad in some parts.

lol i didn't think it was any diss to Idaho....it just showed the contrasts of those from small towns in general to big cities.

reply

Yeah, I don't think it was anything against Idaho... but you have to think... if you are from a big city and used to a LA lifestyle, a small town in Idaho would feel like that.

reply

This was filmed in the Monrovia, CA area a suburb northeast of LA.

It could pass for a small town.

I'm also from Idaho. I didn't want to see the movie after I found out it wasn't even filmed here, but I got curious and eventually watched it. What got me was how they had to get in and really push things they saw as defining Idaho. They did the whole small, boring town thing. Plus Harlan, and most of the town for that matter, is a strict Mormon. I know they used a fake town, but the towns that are really Mormon like that are in the southeastern part of the state and the scenery in the movie is way different than that part of the state (think Napoleon Dynamite). It seemed like they were going for up north which doesn't have that strong of a Mormon presence.

And the whole Basque thing. Way overdone! Idaho does have the largest Basque population outside of the Basque Country, but come on. Yeah I have Basque friends who like to talk about being Basque but it was completely overdone with the Izzy character. Plus the Basque population here is definitely not in those small Mormon towns!

They were pushing this kind of stuff so hard to try to prove that they were in Idaho. At least they had the decency to not include potato farmers or some nonsense like that.

now you know how it feels! lol. i live in ireland, and most films about ireland mean bogs, dirt roads, old men drinking guinness, farmers and young red haired women looking for a man, old cars, and sometimes even horses and carraiges, terrible accents and in your face catholicism and play some form of string instrument! :-(
i live in a city center apartment, have dark features, have a normal accent, drive a 2010 ford, work in an office. i dont know any farmers, im not religious, i rarely drink and am happy being single for now, dont play any instruments and
i live about 50-60kms from our nearest bog....
