Anyone else mislead?

I saw this when it first came out three years ago. Sometimes I still watch the trailer.

When I first saw the trailer, it made it look like a comedy, but it was a very dark and dramatic film.

As I watch the trailer now, I can't believe how dark of a story it is. It looks like it could be a comedy, more like a light-hearted comedy other than slapstick style. But it was very serious. It had maybe two or three funny moments in it. For example, Lindsay Lohan (Rachel) fighting with the boy and when they're sprayed with water, she says he's hard. That was kind of funny. But it had a lot of dramatic moments like drinking and rape.

Life isn't a play-to-play thing. It's a play-to-win thing

They marketed this completely wrong, and I think that's why many people were disappointed.

Kind of like Terms of Endearment, except my mother and I liked that one up till Debra Winger got cancer, this one was just bad all over.

LOL I was just coming on this board to mention this. I saw the trailer and it was a stupid stupid comedy. Saw the movie and it was a stupid stupid drama...

What in the world? Reminds me of that movie "STARRING STEVEN SEGAL" and he dies in the first 10 minutes or something (when they dock a stealth fighter to a jumbo jet... I forget the name but wtv)

It sucked even more if you worked at a movie theatre when this movie was out. Mothers were bringing their 12 year old daughters to it and walking out flipping out because they thought it was a mother daughter movie and it turned out to be far to adult.

It was rated R! What kind of mother takes their 12 year old to a rated R movie without watching it first to make sure it's appropriate. So their poor "research" of taking 2 seconds to glance at the rating makes it the fault of the commercial? I'm sure since it was only 5 years ago it said why it was rated R.

I just don't get parents who blame everyone but themselves.

I worked at a movie theater myself, if a customer complained to me about a movie being violent and I saw it was rated R, I would have said "well, it's Rated R, I'm sorry but what did you expect?"

reply

Sorry for late response, but I just had to write and say how right you are. My local video shop had this in the Comedy section and when I explained the subject matter, they looked horrified.

There are lots of mislabeled "comedies" I've found. I think it's an intense family drama with humor. It is light-hearted, largely thanks to the Georgia character. Her quirks which are so well played by Jane Fonda, lend light to this. The acting is so good all-around. I think, as was previously said, Terms of Endearment is of this ilk as well. As Good as it Gets, perhaps another. Serious issues happening to people with a sense of humor.

I know this was posted a few years ago, but I would like to add that not everywhere rated this movie R. In Canada depending on where you lived it ranged from G to 14A (the equivalent to PG 13)

Argentina:13 / Australia:M / Canada:14A (Alberta/British Columbia/Manitoba/Ontario) / Canada:PG (Nova Scotia) / Canada:G (Québec) / Finland:K-13 / Germany:12 / Iceland:12 / Netherlands:12 / Portugal:M/12 / Singapore:NC-16 / South Korea:18 / Sweden:15 / UK:15 / USA:R

So where I lived the movie was only PG, so yes, parents took their kids to it. Might I add Canada is WAY to lax with ratings.

Honestly I found that part kind of disturbing. She had been acting a bit sexual towards even the little boy, but got upset when...well, that happened.

reply

Maybe because she's a victim of child abuse and molestation? Her understanding of sexuality and boundaries is warped.

Yes, this movie seemed very purposely misrepresented in it's promotion. I fully believe the film was marketed the way it was on purpose. But I almost think it would have found more success had the team, working on it just advertised the movie more honestly. The "generational family comedy" promotion that it received really just made it look like a throw-away film with respected and popular actors.
